David and I have been talking about this lately and I’m curious to hear what other people do.

What do you call your mother? What do you call your grandmother? What do you have your children call you?

Whenever I talk to Peanut, I always refer to myself as “mama”. I’m not sure why since I did not grow up with this terminology. I have noticed among my southern blogging friends that using the term “mama” is very common, even for adult children.

When I was growing up, we called our grandmothers by their last names such as Grandma Smith or Grandma Brown. I don’t know, but that seems kind of formal to me now that I think about Peanut calling her grandmothers and grandfathers by those names.

So, I’m curious to hear what other people do and how it probably varies regionally and culturally. I’m looking for inspiration! 🙂

I have to admit that I am totally oblivious to a lot of what is going on in the world around me right now. I realized this morning – oh, yeah. We are electing a governor and a senator in a few weeks. Oh, it is going to be October on Sunday. Oh, we need to get our fall and winter clothes out of the basement. You know. Ordinary stuff.

Instead I’ve been thinking about… What should I put on the baby for her picture? Where are we going to put her swing? Do I have the infant CPR/choking info posted on both floors of the house? What will fit me to wear home from the hospital? What will David eat while I’m in the hospital? I’m kind of oblivious to everything else.

However, I am not oblivious to the fact that the Detroit Tigers are in the playoffs for the first time in 19 years. Yes, that is half of my life. There is no longer-suffering fan than my mom who watches or listens to most of their games every year, including the miserable years they’ve had recently. Since we don’t have cable, we went out and bought a nice antenna so we can get FOX on the TV while she is here helping out after Peanut arrives. I mean, yes, a granddaughter is important, but waiting for Peanut to be born has only been half the time we’ve been waiting for the Tigers to get back in the playoffs.

I just realized that even this topic that is not about the baby still comes back to the baby. 🙂

Someone left a comment last evening that I should do a post and let everyone guess the name of the baby. That sounds fun to me, so here we go!

I do want to mention that I did ask for suggestions a while back and gave some “guidelines” that David and I were working under.

Here are the “guidelines” David and I are operating under. (And I sincerely hope I don’t offend anyone by what I write here. These are just our preferences!)

No trendy or made-up names
No trendy alternate spellings
Nothing excessively popular (This is a hard one because many of my favorite names in the past are now really popular so I won’t consider them any longer – names like Emma, Grace, etc. I like having a “different” name and not being one of ten “Xs” in my circle of friends.)
Classic and timeless names are best
Old-fashioned is good, outdated is not

So if you want to take a guess at the first and middle names you think we might have picked, feel free. Our last name is Borrink if that helps in guessing something that sounds good (which was very important to me since we don’t have the most beautiful or melodic last name to work with!).

NO ONE knows the name other than David and me. We haven’t discussed names with anyone else and we don’t even use the name around the house. We still call her Peanut all the time. I’m afraid if I start calling her by the name we’ve chosen, I’ll slip and use it in front of someone else. So I don’t even THINK of her by her name yet. In fact, it will be weird at first to call her by her name and not call her Peanut after using Peanut for nine months! We’ll have to slowly switch over since whenever I talk to her now I call her Peanut. If I start calling her by her name as soon as she’s born she won’t know who I’m talking to! LOL!!!
