For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

We happened across Market Day at the library one day while perusing the shelves for our pile of books to bring home. It was a book we all instantly liked and have read many times since.

Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte and Gertie are five sisters growing up in a poor Jewish family in New York City in the early 1900’s. The classic read-aloud All-of-a-Kind Family series by Sydney Taylor includes five chapter books that follow the joys and sorrows, faith and celebrations of the special family.

A few of my favorite books growing up were Lois Lenski chapter books. Lenski was a prolific writer and I read many of her books over the years. She has such a distinctive approach both in terms of her writing style as well as her illustrations.

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg was one of my favorite picture books when I began my teaching career. I immediately purchased a copy to use as a launch for both discussions and creative writing projects.

Sometimes I think parents get hung up on making sure everything is edifying and purposeful. Some parents are deeply concerned about avoiding what Charlotte Mason calls twaddle.
But you know what? Sometimes you and your child want books that are just plain fun.
