Sometimes I see a book in the bookstore and instinctively know there’s a high probability it will be coming home with me. Home in the Woods by Eliza Wheeler was one of those books.

But I have to be honest. After I picked it up and opened it, I almost didn’t keep reading because the artwork style of the faces on the opening page isn’t something I normally warm to. But I kept reading because I thought I would like the story.

I’m glad I did. This is a wonderful addition to my picture book collection and A Month of Cozy Children’s Books.

Home in the Woods is the story of a family that must move into a tarpaper shack in the northern woods of Wisconsin during the Great Depression. It is based on the childhood experience of the author’s grandmother.

I won’t tell you why they must do this. You’ll have to read the story.

They have no money so they must work hard to survive through the various seasons.

Every member of the family plays an important part.

They pull together as a family and make the most of every resource they have access to where they are.

Starting with the summer when they move in, the book goes through the various seasons during the first year they live in this tumbledown shack in the woods.

The family makes the most of every situation, infusing joy whenever possible.

Home in the Woods is a lovely book about a loving close-knit family, working hard, the seasons, and making the best of a difficult situation. I’m so glad I gave it a chance and brought it home. I highly recommend it. ♥

Brave Irene - A Month of Cozy Books 2

Brave Irene by William Steig is a cozy picture book that deserves a place on your bookshelf. I’ve featured it in the post Children’s Picture Books About Courage, but also wanted to include it among my favorites in A Month of Cozy Children’s Books.

Brave Irene

Irene’s mother has sewn a beautiful ball gown for the duchess, but is too sick to deliver it through the cold and snow in time for the ball. Although she is small, Irene assures her mother she will accomplish this very important errand and deliver the gown to the palace in time.

Irene must battle many obstacles while making her way through deep snow and icy wind. She continues on, drawing on her courage and determination. At last Irene is able to deliver the dress and receives a wonderful and unexpected reward.

Your children will enjoy this story that features a loving family relationship, serving others, and demonstrating courage and perseverance.

Happy cozy reading!

View Full Post with Embedded Content75 Children’s Books About Farms & Agrarian Life

Farms and agrarian life are fascinating subjects for children. I’ve created this list of children’s books related to these themes to help you find a wide variety of books to use in your home. This list includes both picture books and non-fiction books. I included topics such as animals, crops, machines, family life, the old ways, and more. I’ve organized the books in alphabetical order by title.

Most of the books are in print and available for purchase on Amazon so I have linked to them there. You might need to look for some at your library or a used books website. As always, it is important that you review each book to determine if it meets the needs and values of your individual family. The inclusion of a title here does not indicate an endorsement of all of the content or the author. I hope you enjoy many books from this list with your children!

Farm Printables

Before we get to the books, I wanted to share a couple of things with you. If you are studying farms and agrarian life, I have a few printable products that would make great companions to your study.

Farm Fun Fact Cards

This set of Farm Fun Fact Cards includes so many fascinating facts about farm life including facts about crops, farmers, and more. There are many ways to use these cards which I list in the product description. Just click on the link above or the product cover to see more.
