40 Things I’ve Learned By Age 40 | #8-15

I’m continuing my series of 40 Things I’ve Learned By Age 40.

8. Time does heal most wounds, but not all and not completely.

9. It is easy to measure success in life. Simply ask yourself, “Am I more Christ-like now than I was a year ago?”

10. Your dress size does not determine your beauty or your value.

11. You cannot change other people. Think how hard it is to change something in yourself, even when you really want to change. Why do you think you can change someone else? Only the Holy Spirit can change someone.

12. Most relationship problems are the result of expectations.

13. If you desire to grow in godly wisdom and discernment, you will suffer. There is no way God can grow you in these areas without putting you in difficult situations that present you with the opportunity to make a foolish choice and fail to discern the truth.

14. Sometimes God doesn’t give us what pray for. This should make us fall flat on our faces in gratitude.

15. You are the only wife your husband will ever have. If you are a lazy homemaker, boring conversationalist, crummy cook, disinterested lover, or undisciplined mother, your husband has to live with your shortcomings every day. If you are a diligent homemaker, interesting conversationalist, thoughtful cook, eager lover, and disciplined mother, you will be a joy to your husband each day.

I am enjoying these too and, at 50, I identify with many. And still have many to learn! I especially like #14. It’s amazing to me how true this one is. How humbling to realize we know not what our future holds but God does and knows what is best.

#15 is a lesson that God is finally allowing me to learn. I’ve been married for almost 8 years now and in those years the Lord had to let my husband and I realize our sinfulness by bringing them all out, particularly each of our selfishness. It’s been really rough having to go through some hard times, but through them, light was shed in the deep and dark crevices of our hearts. Now that my husband and I have come face to face with our sins and have been shown our weaknesses to change on our own but the power we have with his Spirit, the Lord is allowing us to overcome those sins and we are, in small steps, learning our biblical roles as husband and wife and learning to truly love and enjoy one another.

Praise God for the wisdom he’s given to you and the ability to express them for the encouragement and edification of others.

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to examine all of life and think for yourself.

I hope you will join me here where we discuss all of life each day.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
