I hope your July has been an enjoyable one so far. It’s hard to believe we are half way through the month. The past two weeks have simply flown by.
We never had bluebirds around until our neighbors put nesting boxes in their yard. Over the past two years we’ve seen them more frequently. This week a male has started perching on the ball of the flag pole on the back deck. It makes me so happy to see a bluebird sitting there with the Stars and Stripes fluttering in the breeze.
In the homemaking realm, I spent time tidying up some parts of the basement. David and I did a big rearrangement of the pantry to make things more logical and make room for some extra things we purchased. He also wiped down everything (since I’m allergic to dust). So it’s all freshly organized and tidy. Few things in life make me as happy as seeing things freshly organized. LOL! That’s how I am.
With no planning ahead, I abruptly joined the No Poo ranks. If you don’t know the terms, it’s for people who go commercial shampoo free. Why? Because this showed up in my Gab feed:
Normally I don’t pay a lot of attention to stuff like that because I only have so much mental space to track down every issue. HOWEVER. See that green mint shampoo in the picture? That’s what I use. I use it because it is one of the only shampoos I found with a scent that didn’t make me sick. Guess what I have struggled with a LOT in the recent years? Hair loss. Very bad hair loss. Really very bad hair loss. The day I saw that come through and verified there was indeed a lawsuit, I stopped using it.
So I went totally no poo (water only) and it’s been a week. My hair feels better already. There is no smell. And, of course, I am closely monitoring my scalp to see if there is any kind of reversal in my hair loss. It makes me sick to think of what we trust these companies with regarding our health.
Naturally Caroline doesn’t want to use it now either. Does anyone know of a good shampoo line that isn’t drowning in scent and won’t kill my daughter prematurely or make her beautiful hair fall out? If so, please leave a comment. (Baking soda and vinegar would be a totally no go with her so I’ll just nix that suggestion before someone makes it.)
That is pretty much all of the “extra” things I did in the past week because I’ve been working diligently for long days on another project. I hinted at this last week and it finally launched this morning. I wrote about the project in a separate post so it wouldn’t get lost in this post. You can read about it at Living and Thriving in the Grand Solar Minimum.
Whew! Now that we’ve launched that website, I am looking forward to spending a bit more time back here.
What is going on in your home right now? I hope you’ll leave a comment and share!

Hello Sally;
I’ve used a water/baking soda mix in one squirt bottle, and a water/apple cider mix in another bottle. I rinsed well. My hair was nice and soft. Try about once a week. The only drawback was how chilly each bottle was. Maybe placing each in warm water might take the chill off.

Here’s an option.

Read the description – it’s not just for babies.
Dr. Wiggy practices medicine in our area but seeks to find root causes. Their practice helped my daughter with issues that we couldn’t find help for with other doctors. Highly recommend their products and blog articles and podcast called “Healthy Discourse.” They think outside the box – as you do 🙂

No poo?–wow!
It sounds like it is going well for you. I had three weeks of greasy hair when I started no poo’ing some years back. More recently I’ve been using a small amount of shampoo maybe once a week. I don’t like to use shampoo because it will make some hair fall out on the spot.
With the baking soda and vinegar, I think what happens is the baking soda combines with your hair oils (if you give it a minute) to make a sort of soap, and then the vinegar rinse afterward brings in an acid to crudely balance out the pH, remove odors, and maybe smooth down the hair shafts.
So probably the baking soda part could be replaced with a little mild soap, and the vinegar with diluted citrus juice. And I would warm the rinses up; I stopped using them because they were cold and I was too busy to think of warming them.

The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic database rates products (and each of their ingredients) based on their toxicity (ewg.org). We’ve used it for years to choose less toxic sunscreens, shampoos, soap, etc. Of course, the least toxic products are harder to find and more expensive, and often are harder to apply/use (for instance the shampoos don’t produce as much suds).

Thank you for all the good ideas! I appreciated each one while I was sorting through what to do.
