Caroline was ready for a room update after six years of a little girl’s room. It was time to jump into decorating a tween girl’s bedroom which was fun! She likes color so I knew whatever she chose would be bright and cheerful. Caroline started by selecting her bedding (which you can see above) and then we made the other decisions around that.

Caroline made a sign and we were ready to get started! (Although I’m not sure how the renovations would get done if we stayed out…)

Caroline’s Tween Girl Bedroom Decor

Caroline’s room was a pretty medium purple color. She chose Valspar Ocean Whisper for her new color. I was concerned it might be too bright when we tried a sample on the wall, but in the end it was gorgeous and perfect for her! We had a heated and friendly family debate about whether the color is green or blue. She insists it is blue. I see green. The truth is, it appears differently in the changing light throughout the day and with the weather. Sometimes it is clearly green and other times if the light is just right it almost looks like a Tiffany’s box blue. Whichever one shows up, it’s always pretty.

Caroline also wanted to paint a large picture to put over her bed. We purchased a large 36×24 inch canvas for her to use.

She used acrylic paints for her painting. She’s interested in trying lots of different things out right now with her art. She purchased a package of foam brushes to use this time as well.

She incorporated some elements of her bedding in the picture.

Chalkboard Wall in a Tween Bedroom

We decided to put a chalkboard wall in her room. This became a bit of a real story in and of itself so I wrote about in a separate post. If you have ANY inkling of doing a chalkboard wall in any part of your home, please read my other post.

We used Rust-Oleum Black Chalkboard Paint. The details of using the chalkboard paint are in the other post. Here is the finished product that looked great in the end, but that we won’t be using for chalk.

We changed out the carpeted floors for wood laminate. We chose a traditional and classic oak look that we’re also using in the other bedrooms and throughout a good portion of the first floor. (We are in the process of updating most of the house after living here for six years. So exciting!) We are switching to wood laminate as much as possible for the sake of my allergies (especially dust).

Tween Girl Bedroom Ideas

Caroline wanted a butterfly chair and stand. She made the stand with her daddy out of a tray she spray painted gold and then added wooden dowels for legs. (She was full of ideas for things to make and spray paint since her favorite thing to watch other than “Littlest Pet Shop” is HGTV!) She sprayed a number of things either gold or gold glitter.

Caroline wanted a faux fur rug, a nightstand, and a gold lamp. Her grandpa made the nightstand for her.

We all like the black accent chalkboard wall in the room and have decided to leave it there for now. In the end, we purchased a cute magnetic dry erase board with bulletin board strips for Caroline to use.

She will use the rest of the wall for displaying her artwork. The black wall actually makes a great backdrop for drawings and paintings so I am sure it won’t take long for her to start filling it up with her artistic creations.

As you can see below, we kept the long desk that is made out of a countertop. We painted the wooden structure that supports it white to match all the woodwork. Caroline painted flowers on the front of the wooden structure. The light gray countertop fits in great with her bedding and other color choices!

The white bookcase below is where she creates Littlest Pet Shop rooms. When I took these pictures she was just back in her room and hadn’t had time to get the different floors decorated yet. But that’s an activity she enjoys as she’s always been fascinated with miniatures and creating vignettes.

Caroline loves her new tween room!

I have to admit it was a bit hard for me to say good-bye to her little girl room. Since she’s our only child it’s like a huge step forward to admit I don’t have a little girl any longer. But I thoroughly enjoyed decorating a tween girl’s room and am thankful for the fun we had creating a final result that she loves so much and should meet her needs for a number of years to come!
