This Year, I’m Prepared for the Sickies

If you’ve read my blog for a bit, you might remember that we were sick a lot last winter. I was sick more in a few months than I was in multiple years prior. Having an infant/toddler will do that to you.

This year.. I. AM. READY.

Ginger ale? Check.

Crackers? Check.

Cold and Flu Remedies? Check.

Children’s Tylenol and Motrin? Check.

Adult Tylenol and Motrin? Check.

Chicken broth for making soup? Check.

Cooked chicken frozen in the freezer for making soup? Check.

Cough drops? Check.

Kleenex? Check.

Vick’s VapoRub for adults and children? Check. (I love the smell of that stuff!)

Replacement filters for Caroline’s humidifier? Check.

I still need to throw a package of Welch’s frozen fruit bars in the deep freeze, but other than that we’re pretty good to go.

The only thing worse than being sick is being sick and not having anything on hand that you need.

So are you ready?

Yes, I am ready except for the ginger ale. I hadn’t thought of that!!! I just saw some on sale at Kroger and I think I’ll pick it up this weekend. Thanks for sharing your list!!

You’re so good with your organization! I’m lucky if I’ve got food to feed us for the week.

You’ve inspired me to make my own “sick kit”!

I’ve been working on cold and flu season prep as well. Except for Tylenol, we’ll do our best go the natural route, especially considering the uncertainties with children’s cold/flu medicines for my 2 year old. I’ve got a mullein/slippery elm cough syrup brewing, I have several jars of echinacea and elderberry tincture (cold/flu herbal med) and lots of vitamin c. I need to add some tissue and aloe vera gel for sore noses.

Like you I’m preparing. Like Ann, we go the natural route.

I stock up on tea tree oil, acidophilus, flax oil, & vitamin C.

We really rely on EmergenC in our house to combat the sickies…it’s powdered vitamin C that can be mixed with water or juice. It tastes good, helps get more liquids in, and makes the C easily absorpable. It really cuts down on the length and frequency of colds!

we like to keep a few packages of the instant single serve gatoraid mix on hand for electrolyte replacement. and rely heavily on airborne and vitamin c and garlic.

I sincerely admire your preparedness! We are on our second round of colds already 🙁 . I am learning that my liver condition has made me more fragile and unable to resist colds. Our son has always been quite susceptible to them, but never seems to be bothered about having one – he’s just as happy and cheerful (and energetic!) as ever. I, on the other hand get quite tired out by germ fighting! I have already made 2 batches of chicken noodle soup and yesterday, I bought the ingredients to make more – it is so soothing and good!
One of our very favorite cold comforts is Kiss My Face Cold and Flu bubble bath and Room Spray – I keep those on hand always! We love Vicks too and often put a teaspoon in the bottom of a heavy bowl and pour boiling water over it. We put our heads over the bowl and cover everything with a thick towel to make a steam tent – it really relieves congestion.
We keep crystallized ginger on hand as well as the gingerale – nibbling on it often relieves an upset tummy quickly – and it’s quite yummy!
Thanks for reminding me that we need tissues …. I’ll get that on the list right now!

Our list also includes EmergenC and Zicam, which reduced the frequency and severity of our colds last winter. If I do get a cold, I’use Neutrogena’s Norwegian hand cream around my nostrils. It makes an invisible barrier to protect my nose from becoming raw. It doesn’t clog pores either!

Ah, yes. The electrolyte replacements. Forgot those. That’s why two (or ten) heads are better than one. Got those so they are “check”. Thanks!

Thanks for the other ideas, too. I’ll have to check into them. 🙂

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.
