The Challenges of Homeschooling High School for Five Years

Making the decision to add a fifth year to your homeschooled child’s high school can be the best choice for your family. We are happy with our decision to do so (Homeschooling a Fifth Year of High School).

However, it also presents some challenges. Any time you go outside of the norm, you’ll find additional ways you don’t quite fit in.

I sat down to talk about this for a few minutes. I hope you find this helpful and encouraging as you make decisions for your own family.

We homeschooled a fifth year of high school with E and I’m so thankful we did! I think it was helpful for her educationally, socially, and maturity wise.

We have been in very homeschool friendly church settings, so when we explained that we were doing another year of school, we didn’t face any pushback in terms of Sunday school / youth group / Awana. She just kept on as before.

She always joked that she had no idea what grade she was in and she was just going to do school until we said she was finished. 😉 In our homeschool group, that was actually pretty common, so she didn’t stand out all that much. My parents, however, were completely confused. LOL

Caroline has always struggled to answer people when they ask her what grade she’s in. We just don’t think that way and she has no reference for that kind of thinking since she never went to traditional school.

I’m glad it worked out well for E. I can see such tremendous growth in Caroline over the past year. I’m so thankful we backed off and gave her more time.

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to thoughtfully examine all of life and think for yourself.
