I don’t remember how I ended up on the Mensa website in recent years, but I’ve thought about joining off and on since then. As I continue to make changes in my life this summer that align better with who I am, I decided now was the time to try it. So I registered and paid my membership fee last evening. Today I had a copy of my ACT scores notarized and sent them off. I’ll be an official member once those are received and processed.
There were a few things that motivated this decision.
One, I’m curious to see what kind of resources they have for parents of gifted/2e kids. Although I don’t think Caroline would qualify for Mensa at this point if she took a qualifying test, I’m sure there is good info I can adapt to our gifted/2e homeschooling and gifted/2e parenting needs. Mensa offers a lot for gifted kids so it’s worth checking out.
Two, I read through their sample list of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and was pleasantly surprised to find a number that interested me and/or told me there had to be a significant number of conservative leaning members. They included things such as Homeschooling, Pro-Life, Christian Bible Study, Second Amendment, Hunting & Fishing, Conservative, Evangelical Christians, etc. So I look forward to exploring the groups once I have access to the membership side and hopefully finding a couple I will enjoy.
Third, I feel a special burden for gifted women and 2e children in the Christian world. If you want two groups of people who often don’t fit in very well in the average Christian church, it’s them. Every time I have tried to stop writing about these topics, it seems that the Lord draws me back to it. So I decided if I’m going to make this a ministry focus online then I should spend more time in those circles.
So I’m looking forward to seeing how this new part of my life develops!
