Here we are on Friday. I hope your week was a good one. Mine was kind of a slog. I’m personally aware of a lot of sadness and brokenness right now. This was a week where it all weighed on me a bit. Most of it I can’t do anything about even though it does impact my life in various ways. Some of it does directly impact all three members of our family and will necessitate guidance from the Lord and decisions.

I think what is wearing on me the most is that so many parts of life right now lack closure. Everything is just kind of hanging there, waiting for the other shoe to drop. You can’t even get closure when you want to because there is much you can’t control. So you can only do the best you can with what you can control and keep going. It’s wearying. If you are a long-time reader, you might remember I have collected quotes for decades (before the internet) and this is one of my favorites:

Right now the never-ending-ness of so many tasks is wearing on me. But I press on and adjust my thinking. We have to be mentally strong, just like I talked about this week.

(Okay, while I was working on this post the SCOTUS decision re: ROE V. WADE dropped. PRAISE GOD! I started a thread just about this here: ROE V. WADE OVERTURNED. I keep stopping what I’m doing here to check what people are saying on social media as they celebrate and because my eyes keep welling up with tears of joy, relief, and gratitude. PRAISE THE LORD.)

This Week’s Artwork

Today I’m featuring Playing With Baby (1869) by Richard Sohn. The file I found online is a photograph of the original art so the details aren’t as fine as they could be, but I liked it and wanted to use it.

(How Providential was it I found this artwork last night and felt compelled to use it on this historic day before I knew it would be historic?)

Richard Sohn (1834-1912) was a German artist. His Wikipedia entry is rather short:

He completed his public school education in 1851 at the “Städtischen Realschule” (now the “Humboldt-Gymnasium Düsseldorf [de]“). His first artistic studies were with his father. Later, he attended the master classes taught by Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and, after 1862, took private lessons from Rudolf Jordan,^[1] who was married to his mother’s youngest sister.

In 1867, he made a study trip to Paris. He was also influenced by the work of his cousin, Wilhelm Sohn, although he remained generally true to the styles of the Düsseldorf school of painting. His works sold very well in the United States.

Described by his sister-in-law as “quiet and inconspicuous”, he never married and, after 1870, lived with his mother. After her death in 1884, he moved to a modest home of his own and opened a studio nearby.

Homeschooling

Caroline and I decided to take two weeks off so this was our first full week off. Our plan is to reassess the rest of the summer after July 4th.

Homemaking

I did some small tasks, but nothing terribly exciting to write about.

We have an extra glider in the house and I put it in my office. It makes things a bit more tight, but I really wanted somewhere to sit other than my office chair. At the moment it’s the only rocker/glider we have in the house and it was in the basement. Caroline now comes in to my office multiple times a day to rock and chat.

Work

I spent most of my time this week on work-related things. I made two Sallie’s Stacks and have another one I want to make today.
