Decluttering 1,000 Things

One of my goals in raising Caroline is to demonstrate a healthy attitude toward material possessions – to be thankful and wise stewards of what we have without keeping things we truly don’t need or want any longer. This year I’m removing 1,000 items from our home after being inspired others who did similar things.

This could have been a goal I posted about at the start of the year, but it’s only January 15 so I figure this is good enough. We are fairly good about not keeping a bunch of stuff around we don’t need, but I think I can come up with 1,000 things this year.

I’m going to track where the items go – sell, donate, recycle/trash, give away, etc. I’m keeping a running tally, broken down each month. If you decide to do something similar, leave a link in the comments!

I’ve donated beyond this, but I’m going to stop there with adding to the list and tally! It feels so good to get stuff out of the house!

I want to thank you for this post. It lit a fire under me and my competitive streak took over. I ended up started in February and had 1,000 by June!! We ended up doing a garage sale and used that money to buy new curriculum for this year. (Not sure if I should be proud of embarrassed about that. haha)
I need to set another goal like this for this next year and purge some more. But, again, thank you. I think I would still be drowning with all those things if it wasn’t for this post.

      Hi Mary!

Thank you so much for letting me know you did this challenge! I wondered if anyone else did it so I was encouraged to hear you did and the difference it made. I think it was great you could pay for your curriculum from the garage sale.

I mentioned to David at lunch you had left this comment which led to a discussion of whether or not we could find another 1000 things for 2019. Probably although it might be a little more challenging.

Let me know if you do it again!
