This whole thing is rather amazing to me how crazy it is.
Whatever any individual citizen thinks of Trump, the Establishment hates him. If he said the sky is blue, the Democrats would say it is green just to not agree with him. He has really shown D.C. for what it is.
Part of it is that the Democrats don’t dare to give Trump an easy win; it just gives him momentum for advancing the rest of his agenda. But also, this is an issue they can’t afford to lose to Trump on.
Illegal immigrant numbers are included when House of Representatives seats and electoral votes are apportioned by states’ populations. Plus the children those illegals have here are, or will be, U.S. citizens, and are expected to be a block of very solid D voters. The Democrats need all the immigrants they can get; their base is very urban now, and urban populations have relatively low birth rates.
Trump understands this demographic weakness, and he has been hitting them hard on it.

You are right in that the Democrats do not want to give Trump a win on ANYTHING. And they do depend on that demographic as a voting block both now and in the future. Since Obama and the Progressives persuaded the Democrats to abandon their traditional working class base, they have to cobble together a group of voters however they can.
Watching the Democrats select someone to run against Trump is going to be fascinating on many levels.
