This Counting 1-10 Shepherd and Sheep Picture Puzzle is a simple Nativity-themed Christmas math activity for preschool and kindergarten children.

Children put the numbered strips in order from 1 to 10 to complete the picture of a shepherd with two sheep. It is a sweet, low-prep activity for practicing number recognition, counting order, and fine motor skills during the Christmas season.

Counting 1-10 Shepherd and Sheep Picture Puzzle

This printable includes one picture puzzle featuring a shepherd and sheep. The puzzle is divided into ten horizontal strips, each numbered from 1 to 10. Children can cut apart the strips and then rebuild the picture by placing the numbers in the correct order.

It works well for:

  • Preschool math practice
  • Kindergarten number order review
  • Christmas morning work
  • Nativity-themed learning
  • Homeschool math baskets
  • Quiet table activities
  • Sunday school or Christian classroom use

The completed picture shows a smiling shepherd holding his staff with two sheep nearby. It is a simple Christmas activity that connects naturally with the shepherds in the Nativity story while giving young children practical number practice.

How to Use the Shepherd and Sheep Number Puzzle

  1. Print the puzzle page.
  2. Have your child cut apart the numbered strips, or cut them ahead of time for younger children.
  3. Mix up the strips.
  4. Ask your child to place the strips in order from 1 to 10.
  5. Once the strips are in order, the shepherd and sheep picture will be complete.

You can also laminate the page before cutting it apart if you want to reuse the puzzle with multiple children.

Skills Practiced

This simple Christmas counting printable helps children practice:

  • Counting from 1 to 10
  • Number recognition
  • Number sequencing
  • Visual discrimination
  • Fine motor skills
  • Problem solving

A Simple Nativity-Themed Math Activity

I like Christmas printables that are simple, meaningful, and easy to use. This shepherd and sheep puzzle is not complicated, but it gives young children a hands-on way to practice early math skills while staying connected to the Christmas story.

It would pair nicely with a children’s Bible reading about the shepherds visiting baby Jesus, a Nativity lesson, or a preschool Christmas activity tray.
