Last spring when we had the primary, David told me how to vote. Before you think I’m a poster child for the mindless white woman who votes as her husband tells her to (according to more than a few well-known people –  see video below), let me assure you that is not the case. At that time, I was so burned out on politics that I completely took a break from it. Since I had left Facebook and wasn’t really using Twitter at that point, it made it much easier. I honestly told David to just write down how I should vote and I would vote. I wanted to vote, but I was too burned out to do my own research. So he wrote it down, I carried the piece of paper into the polling area, and I voted. Done.

If you are feeling completely burned out by this mid-term election cycle, I get where you are coming from. I really do. I don’t feel that way right now, but I certainly did with the primaries. But I’d like to encourage you to not let that burnout keep you from voting.

I want you to vote. I’m encouraging you to vote. I don’t even know how you are going to vote, but I am still going to encourage you to vote. If you have kids in your home, explain to them why we vote and why you are voting the way you are. Take them with you. If your kids are grown, vote in the way that you believe is best for their future as well as the future of your grandchildren if you are blessed with them. Too many people have sacrificed way too much for us to have the freedom to vote. This is especially true of what women suffered in order to gain the vote for women. So please vote.

Honestly, when it comes right down to it, I know very little about the people who read and comment on my site. I do recognize certain names of people who comment more than once and even do get to know some people very well through our online discussions. But unless someone tells me about herself, I really have a blank slate – especially if you don’t have an avatar picture.

For example, for the vast majority of people reading this I don’t know your age, where you live, your marital status, your race, your political leanings, your physical appearance (hair color, height, weight, etc.), and so on. All I do know is I want to encourage you to vote.

Since I started writing these posts, it’s probably become clear to anyone who hadn’t figured it out before that I’m a Conservative. Wikipedia defines conservatism this way:

American conservatism is a broad system of political beliefs in the United States that is characterized by respect for American traditions, republicanism, support for Judeo-Christian values,[1] moral absolutism,[2] free markets and free trade,[3][4] anti-communism,[4][5] individualism,[4] advocacy of American exceptionalism,[6] and a defense of Western culture from the perceived threats posed by socialism, authoritarianism, and moral relativism.[7] American conservatives consider individual liberty—within the bounds of conformity to American values—as the fundamental trait of democracy; this perspective contrasts with that of modern American liberals, who generally place a greater value on equality and social justice than on social order and tradition.[8][9]

I would say that’s pretty accurate for me. There are all sorts of flavors of conservatism explained in that article and it’s beyond the scope of this post to get into them. I will say my views are probably some combination of Christian, Constitutional, Fiscal, and Social with a tad of Paleo probably thrown in.

So that’s where I’m coming from.

I wanted to share some last things I’ve found online in case others might find them helpful. I’m not going to lie. I hope everyone reading this will vote straight Republican. I don’t expect everyone will and I will defend people’s right to vote differently. But I do think these mid-term elections are very important. It would have been easier for me to say nothing about all of this. But I felt compelled to speak up because I do think it’s that important.

I do hope the Democratic Party is crushed in this election. Why? Because I think the reasonable people in the Democratic Party need to reclaim their party or the Far Left will be taking it over completely and I don’t think it is in anyone’s best interest for the Far Left to have increasing significant influence in this country. It is better for the USA in the long-run for the Democratic Party to figure out who they are as soon as possible and move back toward the center if at all possible. For a long time people have been wishing for more than two parties. If the Democratic Party breaks up, they may get their wish.

So here are some things to consider. In the interest of time, I’m not going to say much about them. Most of them are self-explanatory, I think. If something isn’t, feel free to start a discussion in the comments.

In case you missed it the first time around, this is what I was referring to in my first paragraph. This is supremely insulting. Hillary on women voting as they are instructed to do so by the men in their life.

And an article about it: Millions of women voted for Trump, and didn’t need a man to do it

Bernhard’s correlation between raising children and the inability to think for oneself is unclear. But for many people, the only legitimate definition of a thoughtful woman is someone willing to march wearing a vagina-themed hat, pledge allegiance to the pro-choice cause and support only Democrats for public office. If a woman voted for Trump, she most certainly did so because her domineering husband made her do it.

The complaints by Clinton and Bernhard appear based on their frustration that, despite decades of attempts to define “real women” using the criteria of feminism and progressive politics, many women still march to their own drumbeat.

Thousands of strong, smart, independent women in Highland County, Ohio, voted for Trump for president, as they did across the nation. I don’t have to venture further than my own family to identify accomplished women who enthusiastically supported Trump, including my mother, a retired postmaster; my sister, a successful small-business owner and city council member; my wife, a journalist; and my daughter, a teacher with a master’s degree in education.

Is it possible people such as Clinton and Bernhard are oblivious to how insulting their comments are to the millions of women who chose the Trump-Pence ticket? Or do they simply not care?

This is what is coming from college campuses. This is what parents are paying for. These are the kids who will be leading this country. This line of thinking has to be stopped in its tracks. This is the Far Left.

Socialism is on the rise in America

Socialism was tried 100 times in the 100 years resulting in 100 million people slaughtered all for the “greater good”

Did you see this? The media never shows this kind of stuff.

I shared this in the comments of another thread, but wanted to drop it here too. This is a focus group on November 2 in Arizona. Mix of views, ages, backgrounds including men, women, Democrats, Republicans, etc. Very interesting. Yes, it’s FOX and Laura Ingraham so there is a right of center aspect to the way she conducted it. But there’s still stuff to observe. A few things stood out to me. I’m wondering what other people notice when they watch it.

Imagine if anyone else said what Hillary says here. If it was a Republican or Conservative, it would be on loop for days, every hour on the hour on CNN and MSNBC. Most people would lose their jobs over something like this. Hillary gets a total pass.

    Hi Sallie,
Good piece here. Some scattered thoughts.
My late 70s and early 80s parents marched themselves down to the NC Republican office to volunteer to get out the vote for Republicans because “Trump needs the support,” and because they have been routinely insulted by the liberal part of my family. This is the first time in my 53 years I have ever seen them do anything political at all. My dad put it simply… ” Democrats must eradicate the Socialists from their party if they have any hope of survival.” This from a man who would listen to all sides so as “to be well-informed”, in his words. He now only can stomach Fox News. These are strange times, indeed.

I was and am mightily offended by the sexist nonsense aimed at my vote. I spent 35 years in NYC and was well versed in equal rights. I would have and will vote for a dead squirrel before I would have or will vote for HRC or her ilk. Between her insulting my educated choice and calling me part of the basket of deplorables, she, the drama of Obama’s racism-not-racism, and the sell-out of the mainstream media, are responsible for this craziness. This is a turning point in history. May God have mercy on our country.

Also, I would trust my husband to know me well enough to advise me on how to vote if I had no time to research. As I would him. He wouldn’t tell me for his vote, but for what he knows is important to ME. Mainly, pro life candidates.

I had no choice in 2016, but trusted Mike Pence’s prolife and Republican record that I could vote for that ticket.

Sounds like your dad and I are on the same page regarding the situation with the Democrat Party. Unless they want to go full-on Socialism, the Democrats are in deep doo-doo. The Democrat running for Governor in Florida is so hard left that I can’t believe that race is as tight as it is. I noticed that both Trump and Pence were in Pensacola tonight for a rally.

I laughed out loud at your dead squirrel comment. So did David. 🙂

Re Florida and similar races, I believe alot of the left are still supporting and voting as “NeverTrump”-ers, which is very dangerous. Some aren’t even aware of these left candidates!
I have one family member who doesn’t even read or listen to issues, she follows and parrots what she sees on Facebook.

Gillum seems to be associated with a group called Dream Defenders. Part of their manifesto is the following (from an AP article):

The candidate pledge signed by Gillum says: “I will fight for a Florida that divests from prisons, detention centers, guns and police and invest in the basic needs and safety of our people, especially its children.”

The Dream Defenders, in its Freedom Papers, goes even further to say: “Police and prisons have no place in the ‘justice system.’ Police and prisons aren’t just racist, but they work to enforce the separation of rich and poor.”

Although made up largely of African-Americans, Dream Defenders membership includes other minorities and whites. Since the Capitol protest, the group has sought to become politically influential and has been engaging politicians.

I voted via mail; as we can here in Oregon.
My husband voted first and circled what he voted for so I could “cut to the chase” because we are of like mind.

However, I did spend an hour reading before voting anyway.

We spend considerable time talking with our 11 year old son about the political climate and the increasingly Socialist leaning left. He’s been listening well and asking questions that make me hopeful this next generation won’t fall for it.

But then again, there’s a fine line between passing on one’s own observations and beliefs and indoctrination. My husband and I encourage him to research both sides. I don’t always love giving him access to opposing viewpoints, but it does give our family some in-depth conversations over the dinner table!

He’s an online public school student. Recently, he’s studying colonialism and it’s deleterious effects upon the countries visited. I really, REALLY, chapped about how it is being presented, so I told him I would find him an opposing view. I dug deep and found a recent article by Professor Bruce Gilley.

I plan to share this article with him and am sure that will lead to some very interesting discussion that will teach him more than any spoon-fed book learning would!

So anyway, my point is we all get our trusted source of information from those we know best. Voting the way your husband did is totally logical if you are of like mind. He was protecting you by giving you a break when you needed it most.

    NO apologies! 🙂

P.S. Hillary is a bitter female. I feel sorry for her.

      Hi Michele!

I think it is great you are giving your son both sides of the arguments. Our kids will hear them and it’s far better to hear them from us than someone else. We’ve had some interesting discussions with Caroline. And I mean interesting in the depressing sense of the word. It’s sad what we have to discuss with our tweens nowadays.

I’ve found social media is actually quite helpful for getting points across. We’ll talk about something and then when it comes up on Twitter or Facebook, I’ll show it to Caroline so she realizes it isn’t just us saying this. We joke around here that everything is Trump’s fault. Caroline had a cold. We joked it was Trump’s fault. Something else happened. That was clearly Trump’s fault. Then a flow chart came up on Twitter that was basically everything is Trump’s fault. It drives home the point.

We have been talking about how a group of people on the left have lost their minds. I showed her this video and we talked about how this is not normal behavior for an adult. We discussed whether or not I would have gone out in public and screamed like a person possessed if Hillary had won. Caroline was quite confident I would not. LOL! The video is funny, but it’s also profoundly sad. Politics should not make people mentally unstable unless it is revealing what is already there.

Of course, if Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House (and two heartbeats from the Presidency) and Maxine Waters is Chair of the Financial Services Committee after Tuesday I may feel like screaming too. But I won’t. I will have to get up and keep working and living my life.

On the Ingraham video: “Charity begins at home.” –Exactly!

Jesus put it more bluntly: “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” (Matthew 15:26)

I have been “checking my math” in preparation for the election, here are some of the things that I have noted:

    1. SOMEONE is lying, shamelessly and continuously. There is no way that everything that I have been hearing can be true all at once.

    2. When they are lying about ME, then it becomes pretty clear who the liars are and aren’t.

    3. Many people aren’t deliberately lying, but are being badly misled in their ignorance and (mis)education.

    4. Democrats keep panicking about how Trump is going to take over as dictator, yet they have continued to press for gun control and citizen disarmament. This simply does not compute.

    5. Trump has been fighting a hostile media the whole time. His Twitter posts, his very skillful handling of the media (by making statements that they can’t resist reporting on), and his speaking directly to thousands and thousands of people at rallies has gotten his message out, regardless. Like him or hate him, Trump is NOT stupid.

    6. Whether Trump is really “good” or not is something that I am less sure of, but I am certain that he wants to at least APPEAR to be good, and that he is smart enough to understand that he needs evangelical Christian’s support. (The Democrats think that they don’t; they depend on immigration for a significant part of their support.)

    More later, probably–time for church.

      Hi Peggy,

I can’t remember who it was, but someone pointed out that if Trump is trying to be a fascist or dictator, he’s the worst one of all time. Practically everything he does is just the opposite of what a dedicated fascist would do. The party of fascism right now is clearly the Democrats.

No, Trump is not stupid. He outsmarts and outmaneuvers just about everyone who tries to trip him up. He simply doesn’t play by the traditional political rules, especially the way past Republicans would fold at the slightest hint of opposition. It’s fascinating to watch him get the best of all these people who are going out of their minds trying to figure out how to finally outsmart him.

Re: whether Trump is “good” or not… I think he wants to go down as one of the great Presidents of all time. I think that motivates him. I think he wants to go down as the man who rescued the USA from the brink of disaster and going the way of so many countries in the EU who are being systematically devastated by immigrants who are not assimilating into the culture (at best) or are destroying the culture of the country.

Sweden is toast. They will never been the same. I think they have already reached the point of no return. Compare them with Hungary who took a hard stance on immigration in order to protect their people and culture. Germany and England are both suffering from increased crime. Free speech is being curtailed throughout the EU. I think Trump wants to keep us from going that way and losing our roots in Western Civilization.

People can say all they want about our culture, but the USA is what it is and has what it has due to the core beliefs of Western Civilization and the Judeo-Christian ethic. If you don’t have those and citizens who buy into those core beliefs, you don’t have the United States of America. He knows that.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube of Trump going back to the 80s during which he talked about the USA and whether he would run for president. He had the same message every time, for decades. He said over and over again the things that needed to be done and he really didn’t want to be the one to do it.

Could he walk away from the “good” path? Of course. He’s human. But I haven’t seen anything to this point that even remotely concerns me. But, then again, I try to listen to him directly in extended comments and not focus on the negative sound bites generated by the mainstream press.

Whatever people think of him, he told people what he would do when he was a candidate and he’s systematically doing it. No one can accuse him of running on one platform and doing something else.

Sallie — I agree that Trump seems to be aiming to be the greatest U.S. president ever. I see that he is making a real effort to unite the country–people forget that he was a Democrat for years and years–and he is wise enough to understand that a nation divided against itself cannot stand.

I would never fault someone from Japan or France or Great Britain or Kenya or Russia or anywhere for loving and appreciating what is best about their culture. And yet if an American appreciates America they are automatically labeled all kinds of horrible things. I’m not apologizing for being thankful for the country in which I live.

And if the USA is so horrible, why do over 100 million people want to come here?

The midterms are very important to vote in. Yes, what happens in our US Congress is so important! What also happens in our state congress is very important also. We have a liberal progressive (I would call him socialist) running for governor of CO. I wish this race was in the news more. I shudder to think of what will happen with religious liberty and more if he gets voted in in my state and the conservatives republican does not and we get a democratic house and senate in my state. He is opening openly gay and made it quite clear he is not for the Masterpiece Cakeshop case going on here again in Colorado. This liberal candidate is currently ahead in the polls.

I agree with the person above and get tired of the lies and I would add seems like propaganda that gets fed to us. Truth is hard to find in politics.

My prayer is that our country desperately needs the Lord and that we would be more understanding and unified with one another and agree to disagree. It concerns me the talk that is out there and the division that is coming from it.

The governor races are also important because districts will be redrawn after the 2020 presidential election. We’ve heard very little about them except for a few.

It is divisive because there are two very different views of America being put forth. We really are in a type of civil war. All of the socialist garbage from so many of the colleges and public schools is now coming into the mainstream as those kids reach adulthood. Our choices are either to beat it back at the ballot box or see it continue to progress throughout every part of our culture.

So I’m going to record some observations before the actual voting day. I am curious to see what I observe correctly and what I get wrong. After I watch the news cycle today, I’ll make my prediction and we’ll see how I do.

I’ll break these observations out by topic in random order so anyone feel free to jump in with your thoughts!

    First, polls.

Everyone knows the pollsters got it all wrong in 2016. So the question is… what did they learn?

There were two pollsters on a show in the past few days who were really interesting. One was a Democrat and one was a Republican. Neither one came across as a partisan hack but seemed invested in getting it right.

The D pollster said one thing they learned is that people who vote with Trump are more apt to reply to a robocall than a real person. The implication was they don’t trust pollsters and the fear of being labeled by a live person is real. (I think they also lump pollsters in with fake news so there is that.)

The R pollster said that Democrats love polls and that generally polls skew a few points in that direction because of it.

One thing I read a few weeks ago about polling was that one of the big papers or polling companies (can’t remember which) said they had to make a tremendous number of calls just to get a big enough sample to be accurate. I can’t remember the exact number but if memory serves me correctly it was like six or seven times as many as they would normally have to make. The reason? People don’t want to take polls. Some people read this as most people who won’t participate in a poll are voting Red.

John James, the Republican running for Senator in my state (Michigan), tweeted one last week that that deplorables don’t take polls. They vote.

So some random observations about polls that jumped out to me. I don’t think anyone really knows. The whole Trump thing has so disrupted polling and this is the first big election since 2016 for the pollsters to see if what they are trying to do to “fix” their problem (with getting it so wrong) will work.

I saw a few articles floating out there the past few days that put forth the idea that now pollsters are overcompensating for what happened in 2016 and so the Democrats are going to do even better than everyone thinks. I’m not buying that line of logic at this point but you never know. I haven’t studied how pollsters have changed things.

My overall thought is that pollsters still can’t get an accurate picture of people voting Red and in support of Trump because people are keeping their mouths shut.

My limited sample size experience agrees with John James. Anyone on the right that I’ve asked has said they don’t “do polls” or they don’t tell the truth. I also agree with you that no one wants to do them. Even 35 years ago, when I worked for a market research firm doing telephone surveys and not even selling anything, it was extremely difficult to get anyone to answer a survey to the end. (I used to thank God that I was paid hourly.) So, if few are answering political polls, it’s kind of hard to legitimately extrapolate that to a national midterm election. But they will most certainly do it illegimately.

If you can wade through this article, it’s a good caution to not judge this midterm election with the presidential election of 2016, for a myriad of reasons, but most importantly because those polls measured popular vote, and came in pretty close to accurate. What many didn’t consider is that Trump won not by popular vote but by electoral college. We don’t have that luxury in 2018. (I do love that “late-deciders” were key “in Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (that) broke for Trump by double-digit margins as high as 29 points.”

More experiential, I spoke with my dad yesterday. Early voting started in NC, and they allow tables by both parties to be outside, with lists of their candidates. He and my mom worked the Republican table. Each party could hand a voter their list and answer any questions. Dad says MANY politely took the Democratic slip, and then whispered to him “I’m a Republican” and took his. When they exited, conversationally, my dad asked them “Doesn’t it feel good to vote? Isn’t it great to be free?” All the self-identified Republicans smiled and said “YES.”

I’m fascinated to see Tuesday’s results.

    Immigration

One thing that has jumped out at me time and again is that people who immigrated legally are HOT about the idea of people in the caravan just showing up and expecting everything once they step foot on American soil. I’ve seen so many legal immigrants explain that they waited ten years, paid a lot of money, and did everything correctly to become citizens. Most of the ones I’ve listened to have been Latinos/Hispanics. There seems to be this assumption among pollsters that all Latinos/Hispanics automatically vote Democrat. I think that’s an unwise assumption, especially among the legal immigrants.

In that Laura Ingraham video above, not ONE person said that everyone in the caravan should be let in the USA except the one hard-core Democrat gentleman on the left end of the middle row. And even he said they should be vetted first. So the idea of open borders as being touted by the Far Left Democrats is not resonating with all Democrats, including those in that group who were pretty solidly Democrat/Left on almost all of the questions they asked.

I think the caravans might have been a blessing in disguise for the Republicans in terms of the election. The people who would never vote for a Republican are the ones who want open borders and to let everyone in. I think there are plenty of people in the center who feel sorry for people who want a better life but realize that you cannot allow this kind of stuff to happen and survive as a country.

I also think Blacks are starting to wake up to the fact that illegal immigration really hurts them. The Democrats are openly campaigning on open borders with seemingly no regard for how much that hurts one of their core constituencies – poor and lower middle class people, especially African-Americans.

When elections are decided by just tens or hundreds of thousands of votes, losing just a small percentage of Latino/Hispanic and Black votes has the potential to really hurt the Democrats.

Many, many Americans are fed up with identity politics. This is also the first election we’ve had since that has become obvious.

The gentlemen who went to school with Farrakhan was also an immigrant, right? I think many Democrats know they can count on the majority of the Black vote. I don’t think the right has adequately dissuaded them otherwise.

Last week the HALLMARK CHANNEL beat CNN in the ratings. Who is watching CNN? LOL!

Things that pollsters cannot completely account for yet and how it plays out…

    #walkaway movement

backlash against the #metoo movement (hard core #metoo people will never vote Republican)

#blexit which has been happening and picking up steam over the past year but only became a hashtag recently

The article that said people are overwhelmingly against political correctness, including Hispanics, Blacks, Asian-Americans, etc.

    Backlash against the Kavanaugh hearing

The average white person is COMPLETELY over the white privilege and white guilt narrative

Boy, none of the pundits want to go out on a limb and make a guess. There is no talk of a blue wave any longer. Lots of talk that no one really knows what to expect and being in uncharted waters. But the polls have all moved away from Democrat domination and steadily to slim Republican leads and toss ups. Several of the Republican pollsters had a twinkle in their eye that was not there last week.

Here’s my attempt to be objective.

Trump has lost little to none of his base. If anything, they are more committed to him.

We know a number of Democrats have walked away, flipped, etc. over the past year. Where they live and vote we don’t know so we don’t know which key races they could possibly impact.

I haven’t seen anyone present any information that leads me to believe that significantly more people hate Trump and the Republican agenda than two years ago. The Hard Left and Never Trumpers are still there and that hasn’t changed. But I don’t think they’ve grown their ranks substantially.

Republican turnout in early voting is way higher than is normal and Republicans tend to not vote early. Republicans going out to vote early are not going out to vote Democrat in overwhelming numbers.

Independents may not like Trump, but they may prefer what is known with him to what is unknown if the Democrats take over.

Weather is going to be a factor in several key states. I think Republicans are more committed to getting to the polls than entitled young Democrats because I think what is driving Republicans (the rule of law and the long-term future of the country) is more compelling than what is driving Democrats (hating Trump and advancing identity politics).

The only way I see a blue wave or a blue sprinkle is if they have registered lots more voters and the young vote comes out.

It’s all about turnout. Whoever gets their people out will win.

Republicans hold the Senate and increase their lead by at least a few.
Republicans keep the House and just barely.

And there is one more reason. If I’m right, I’ll tell you what tipped me off. LOL!

President Trump pauses while waiting for medics to assist a supporter who collapsed. The crowd sings Amazing Grace. Beautiful moment.https://t.co/8HG2VJszXn

    Looking for feedback…

I’m soliciting input from my readers who have read and appreciated the political posts, have participated in the discussions, etc.

I enjoy these topics and would like to provide a place to continue doing this. I don’t know how to do this best. I’m not sure if continuing to make them posts in the blog stream is the best way.

I have thought about creating a place in the forum for them so people would only see them if they want to see them. But I’m not sure people would use the forum.

There are subscription options available with the forum so people could be notified of new posts and discussions.

I am interested in doing this and willing to invest the time to provide a way to chat about politics from a relatively conservative viewpoint in a relatively out of the way and quiet place. But I only want to do this if there is a need and/or desire for it to happen.

Thanks for any feedback. Just be kind. LOL!
