Happy Friday! We made it through another week. It was hot and humid here. I’m not a fan. Thankfully we are getting back to regular summer weather this weekend where it’s only very warm and not oppressive.
Honestly, it wasn’t a very productive week. Heat, humidity, and sunshine just drag me down. I did what I could, but it wasn’t a spectacular week in terms of productivity.
This Week’s Artwork
The painting this week is The Shell by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. It is dated from 1871.
Here is the beginning of his entry in Wikipedia:
William-Adolphe Bouguereau; 30 November 1825 – 19 August 1905) was a French academic painter. In his realistic genre paintings he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body. During his life, he enjoyed significant popularity in France and the United States, was given numerous official honors, and received top prices for his work. As the quintessential salon painter of his generation, he was reviled by the Impressionist avant-garde. By the early twentieth century, Bouguereau and his art fell out of favor with the public, due in part to changing tastes. In the 1980s, a revival of interest in figure painting led to a rediscovery of Bouguereau and his work. He finished 822 known paintings, but the whereabouts of many are still unknown.
I love the expression on the mother’s face and the tilt of her head. How many of us have looked at our young children that way when introducing them to something new?
Homemaking
David’s work really slowed down so we tackled some small jobs around the house. Nothing spectacular, but the little things that make a difference and often get set aside – filling up nail holes on walls and touching up with paint, tidying up the garage, etc. I honestly don’t even remember what we did, but we took care of many little things.
I also made some progress on the basement to prepare for the rolling blackouts I wrote about earlier this week. It’s not done, but I did make progress. Hopefully I will finish that up this weekend.
I still want to clean out and reorganize my kitchen cupboards, but I haven’t had the mental bandwidth lately to make that many decisions. LOL!
Homeschooling
We didn’t do anything this week.
Well, that’s not true. Caroline and I had a long conversation about homeschooling.
But I have nothing new to share here.
Work
I finished up my Black and White Floral Editable Homeschool Planners! Woo hoo! Since David’s work was slow, we decided to tackle this. I’m very happy we are finally able to offer these for people who don’t want to print with a lot of colored ink.

I continue to add to the comments of this post including a lengthy one I wrote myself on Gab this morning:
I sent out a newsletter mid-week and hope to send another one out today after I publish this. If you aren’t subscribed, you can do so here – Subscribe.
I had my first sale on Made By Teachers (woo hoo!) and continue to try to add at least a few products each day. I don’t get to it every day, but I’m slowly making progress..
That’s it for now. What did you do this week? I hope you’ll leave a comment! ♥
Hi Sallie!
Some weeks, you know you got lots done, but each thing was small, so you don’t remember them all! 🙂 You need to have weeks like that where you can address the little annoyances and get them out of the way to make space for the bigger projects.
This week, I got to practice my preparedness. On Monday evening, I was in the middle of reading through some of the articles you posted about the rolling blackouts and we had a storm come through that cut our power! It went out Monday evening around 9:00 pm or so. I went around and made sure everyone had a flashlight and was comfortable. Close to midnight, the power came back on, I set my clock and fell right to sleep. The next morning, I woke up to find out that our power was only on for about 30 minutes, then went back out again! When I checked the social media posts from our energy company, they were unsure of when it would be restored, but the estimate was that it could be very late on Thursday or even Friday before they got it all repaired. Thankfully, it was actually restored Tuesday late evening. I found that I was well prepared for our small family of 3, but not at all prepared for our new family of 5 that now includes my elderly parents. They both use oxygen concentrators at night, my dad has a continuous glucose monitor that reads through his phone, and they are not good with discomfort, even if it is limited. I will need to find some way to power the oxygen machines and charge phones fairly soon. It looks like we should be outside the range of the possible rolling blackouts this summer, but I prefer to be prepared because you never know when you will get a storm that knocks out the power! Many of our neighbors have generators. A whole house generator is outside our budget right now, but I may look into something smaller that we could connect the medical devices, charge phones, and maybe plug in the fridge. One more thing to add to the list! I was so very thankful that the power came back Tuesday night, because Wednesday had heat advisories with the temps in the high 90’s and heat index over 100. While the 3 of us could go into the basement to stay cool, my Mom and Dad can not navigate the stairs, so I would have needed to find some way to keep them cool. There’s always more to do, and I’m glad we had a short learning experience to build on.
We did get some school finished this week, and E told me that when we got to the end of our history book, we were DONE for the year. 😀 We finished the book, so I guess we are finished for the year. This was our 2nd senior year, so I suppose we are finished for good? She would keep going as a homeschooler forever, I think! My mom is bugging us to do some sort of graduation ceremony and party. Since we just moved a few months ago, I don’t think we even know enough people to have a party. LOL Mom has always been the one worried about all the “things” we would miss by doing homeschool – dances, prom, graduations, etc. Of course, those are all things that E would completely hate. She doesn’t even like loud restaurants! LOL I don’t think that college is in the cards for her, but husband works at a university and she can take classes for free, so I hate to pass it up completely. We may try to get her signed up for an art class or something just to see what she thinks of the college experience. She may surprise me and want to follow through with the full shebang, but at least then, it would be her idea and not us telling her what to do, so she would have more motivation and probably more success.
My garden is growing well and I’m starting to see flowers on the squash, melons, and tomato plants! So exciting! My potatoes are growing like weeds too. I’ve never planted potatoes before and I put them in a crate for easier harvesting, and after several moundings, they are over the top of the crates and don’t show signs of slowing. I will have to look into how to harden them off once we harvest so they will last as long as possible this winter.
Thanks for all your news and info through the week. I appreciate it and I feel like I have a better handle on the ramifications of things after you discuss them and help me to connect the dots. I’m sure it’s draining for you, but I want you to know you are helping me! 🙂
Have a good week!
My oldest child has become interested in early American living and clothing, and I am providing sewing advice.
We’re supposed to have another hot spell next week. Last time, closing up the house early in the day instantly made it feel very stuffy inside. It feels better to let the house “breathe”. The basement is much cooler, but is far from comfortable.
Another child and I took a couple of free shipping pallets apart and plan to make display shelves for the child’s many creations.
It was hot here early in the week, and we used the air conditioning for the first time this year. I was feeling cooped up and depressed on Thursday, but yesterday (Friday) it was cooler so I opened up the house in the morning. I was able to get some much needed cleaning done also.
I’m not really homeschooling anymore, but our youngest child still lives at home, and he and I were discussing having our own little Summer reading group with using the three famous 20th century dystopian novels 1984, Brave New World, and A Clockwork Orange. He’s 22, so it should be interesting 🙂 I pray all of the time for our children who are navigating this “culture” as young adults.
