In trying to piece together exactly what is going on behind the scenes with all the political maneuvering regarding impeaching or not impeaching, I thought the discussion in the video below was especially interesting.
(Well, on the one hand I fully understand it. The Democrats hate President Trump and have been trying to remove him since he was elected. But I’m looking for more details than blind hatred.)
Jason Chaffetz, former chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, explains that if the House of Representatives takes an actual vote to begin a formal impeachment inquiry, then the Republicans in the House also get certain rights. This includes the right to subpoena witnesses.
The media is talking about this situation as though there is already an impeachment hearing going on. There isn’t. The House of Representatives must take a vote in order to initiate it. Right now the Democrat leadership is simply playing impeachment by talking points with the willing media (that also hates President Trump).
Not mentioned in this interview is also the fact that Democrats from purple districts that went for President Trump in 2016 will be forced to go on record as either voting for impeachment or not. I think the few semi-sane people left in the Democrat Party know that this could come back to bite them big time next year.
