I am always on the lookout for curriculum and programs that offer students who learn differently another way to approach their educational experiences, especially for homeschoolers. So when I had the opportunity to check out Mr. D Math I thought it sounded like something worth exploring. I was right! Mr. D online math is a program that provides distance learning opportunities and online classes for students. I can see how this would be a great fit for many kids and families so let me introduce you to it!
I received access to this program for free and am being compensated for my time to write this review. I was not required to give a positive review and all opinions are my own.
Mr. D Online High School Math Classes
Mr. D offers several different online math classes. They include:
- Traditional Math Classes including Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry
- Summer Math Classes (1 year of math in 11 weeks! Wow!)
- ACT and SAT Bootcamps
- Entrepreneurship and Life Skills Classes
There are many great options for families who need help getting math done at pretty much every stage along the way as you approach late middle school and high school.
Mr. D Math Lessons
The courses and lessons are very easy to navigate on their newly redesigned website.
The lessons include a number of components such as:
- Course Work (PDF)
- Course Work Solutions (PDF)
- Video of Mr D teaching the lesson material
- Student Notes (to go with video)
- Extra Practice (PDF)
The course work PDFs are very straightforward. No fancy graphics or decorations – just math problems on a white page. So for easily distracted students, these would be a good fit. From everything I was able to observe, the classes and lessons are thorough and well-planned.
There is a chat feature that students can use before the class starts to chat with each other and Mr. D. Once the class begins, the chat feature is still there but students can only address Mr. D or the entire class with a question.
Mr. D Pre-Algebra Online Math
I sat in on one of Mr. D’s pre-algebra sessions. (We had access to an entire course, but Caroline isn’t ready for Pre-Algebra yet so I used the class opportunity myself.) It brought back memories! He was teaching a lesson on the coordinate plane, x-axis, y–axis, ordered pairs, and quadrants.
It was obvious to me that Mr. D enjoys what he is doing with his students. The lesson was engaging and Mr. D clearly has a cheerful personality while teaching (which I think is very helpful for a math teacher! LOL!).
It was also clear that Mr. D desires that his students thoroughly understand the material. The students had lots of opportunities to do sample exercises along with him during the lesson, receive immediate feedback, and ask questions in the chat. He also has regularly scheduled extra help sessions that students can attend outside of class if they have questions or need additional help.
If I had to use a few words to describe Mr. D in my interactions with him, his materials, and his classes it would be genuine, thorough, and approachable. In my opinion, those are all great traits for an online math class instructor. I would think students (and parents) would find Mr. D very approachable and helpful when it comes to meeting their math needs.
Mr. D High School Math Discounts
One note if you have multiple students who would enroll in Mr. D’s math classes… He offers two kinds of discounts!
- Returning students receive a curriculum discount
- Siblings receive a curriculum discount
I always like it when people reward repeat customers!
Thanks again, Sallie. I was wondering about online math courses and bookmarked this to come back to later.
Michele,
You’re welcome! I have heard many good things about this program from families who really liked Mr. D and his courses. It’s definitely worth looking into!
Our son took an online math course through Gifted & Talented (Stanford) last year. I’ve been wondering where to go from there for this summer.
We need to keep busy!
Michele,
Did you try Mr. D Online Math or something else? I’m always curious what people decide on when it comes to gifted/2e kids and math.
Sallie
