Maybe I am hopelessly behind on the news, but just heard about this.
American Girl teams with pro-abortion, pro-lesbian group

This is a bummer. I’ve always wanted one of these dolls, but not now. (I’m a little old for them anyway…)
I got two of the dolls way back when.
This news doesn’t come as a surprise to me, though. The woman who has been writing their books for the past 15+ years has always slanted to the feminist side with her stories. I had already decided to not buy any more of their products for my daughter some time ago, and when the time to expand her collection I plan to buy (and ask Grandma for) stories and clothes from Vision Forum instead.
Sigh….I am hoping to blog about the whole concept of boycotting soon. The American Girl doll boycott is on the heels of the Starbucks boycott which came on the heels of the Wal-Mart boycott. What will be next and where will we be able to shop?
I was thinking of boycotting Vision Forum’s catalog because of their increasingly narrow views of women but my grandsons really “need” the teepee for Christmas!
I think the boycott issue, though, is worthy of discussion.
Good point, Karen. Even as I was writing to American Girl I couldn’t help thinking about all the companies we would have to stop dealing with entirely if we really paid attention to their principles.
PS I just write American Girl and very politely asked them to drop their connection with Girls, Inc. It is such a shame that something that *should* be so good and helpful, i.e. Girl,s Inc., gets twisted so badly. In the past I have written to a few companies and have had some good results- one magazine promptly stopped carrying a horoscope and another group I wrote to promptly went out of business!
We will see what happens this time. If we are genuine and not bullys there is still hope on a lot of these issues.
BTW what’s this about Starbucks? Do I even want to know? 😮
Karen – I would enjoy reading about your thoughts on boycotts. David and I have discussed this off and on through the years, but we are not big boycotters. I heard about the Starbucks boycott, but considering I’ve had a few mochas since then, I guess I’m not participating. I can’t stand WalMart so any boycott there is irrelevant to me. However, I am pretty anti-Disney so maybe I do qualify as a closet boycotter.
And I agree with Cheri – a soft answer turneth away wrath…
The issue it seems to me is how to be in the world but not of the world. David and I moved more towards the “retreating” end of the spectrum for awhile and found it not very spiritually profitable. We’ve also moved more toward the “worldly consumption” end of the spectrum for a while and did not find that spiritually profitable either. Like I’ve written here before, I think that we’ll be “making it up as we go” for the rest of our lives. Our culture is too complex to make blanket decisions once and for all in most cases. And our corporate world is too complex to even begin to understand what we are supporting when we buy shortcut carrots at Meijer.
There is ***NO ONE*** we are going to agree with or support 100%. Even if the readers of my blog got together in a room, I’m sure we’d all find ways to irritate each other if we allowed ourselves to. But we all must share some faith and theological commitments in common if people stop by here to read and comment.
I think we live in a bewildering world and the enemy uses that against us. If he can get people to focus on boycotting Starbucks instead of praying for the people who work at Starbucks, then I think he has won. Maybe God would call someone to give up Starbucks for the cause of the kingdom and maybe ***JUST MAYBE*** God might call someone to stop in there every day for a coffee in order to build relationships and pray for people. I don’t know where the line in the sand is, but I think God wants us to walk alot more by his Holy Spirit’s leading than a lot of us are comfortable in doing and especially allowing OTHER people to do.

We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I think Sallie put things in perspective for us. Every single business on the planet has some issue that we could label as offensive to biblical principles. They ALL hire a homosexual from time to time – they ALL hire people of a faith that kills innocent people – I could go on. Do we hide our neck in the sand? NO! He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. If we forsake these businesses who will pray for them? Instead of boycotting them why not sacrifice 10 minutes a day or week in their business location and pray – lay hands on a building or whatever the Holy Spirit leads us to do? Can you imagine the Christian Community at large all going into a Starbucks each Monday morning at 10am, getting a beverage and sitting down in a commfy chair and praying? I guarantee you -IF- we would mass together on that leval we would see change – HUGE change. Who’s with me?
