Three Young Pilgrims by Cheryl Harness is a wonderful Thanksgiving picture book. Full of fantastic, detailed artwork, it is an excellent cozy book for your homeschooling and will likely become a family favorite to read each year.

Three Young Pilgrims

The story follows the Allerton family from when they are aboard the Mayflower and arrive in Plymouth. The three children experience many hardships in those first years.

From the back of the paperback version I have:

When Bartholemew, Remember, and Mary Allerton and their parents first step down from the Mayflower after sixty days at sea, they never dream that life in the New World will be so hard. Many in their Plymouth colony won’t make it through the winter, and the colony’s first harvest is possible only with the help of two friends, Samoset and Squanto.

Richly detailed paintings show how the pilgrims lived after landing at Plymouth, through the dark winter and into the busy days of spring, summer, and fall. Culminating with the excitement of the original Thanksgiving feast, Three Young Pilgrims makes history come alive.

Three Young Pilgrims is a lovely book with amazing artwork. I highly recommend it as an addition to your family library.

Homeschooling Ideas

Geography – Use the World Map and mark the important places in the story such as England, the Netherlands, Massachusetts, Plymouth, etc.

Bible –  Look up Hebrews 11:13 and 1 Peter 2:11 in the King James Version of the Bible. What do you see? Discuss how these verses might fit with the story of the Pilgrims.

Math – Practice counting 1-10 with the Pilgrims Counting Puzzle or practice counting by 10s with the Pilgrims Hat worksheet.

KWL – Complete a Pilgrims KWL to track what you would like to learn.

Creative Writing – Use the First Thanksgiving Writing Prompts to write more about the Pilgrims and their experiences.

Home Economics – Make berry tarts like Mary ate in the story.

Handwriting – Complete handwriting practice with pages from Thanksgiving Handwriting and Coloring Pages.

History Research – Can you find out more about Mary’s life based on what you learn about her in the story? Use the Thanksgiving Writing Pages to record what you learn.

Hi HAppy THANKSGIVING to you . This book sounds so good. Thanks for psoting it.. and I am going to order it for me. Since I am writing children’s books, I long to read all of them I can.. to gain publishers and also ideas of layout. Hope you have a beautiful day with your loved ones… and blessings and gratitude for all you do to make the world a better place..I have a poem I wrote that is special to me.. written for a friend,, and written by God mostly in a difficult time.. I will post it here below. I have forth poems that God gave me through that time , and am binding them into a booklet soon. to give to give away.

RECOUNTED GIFTS OF GRACE… By Merri Mc Elderry Thanksgiving 2014

How would I thank thee if I had a way,’
For glories shared of God’s love, sent out to me?
For Love, Joy, Truth and Soul, so lavishly you shared each day,
A comfort as my hungering Soul springs upward there to see.

I could not write the ways , no matter how I might,
For all the seconds, minutes, hours you’ve prayed,
That I might somehow climb to Horeb’s height,
My son in Space-filled notes to sing in raptured stars arrayed.

Yet , in the golden stillness of deep , night-hushed Space,
    My feeble pen across the page doth fly;
Recalling all your glory -lights for me of Truth and Grace,
Freeing them here, with words, like star-birds in the sky.

The crossroads comes now with most clear and Truthful site,
Remembering angels God -given purpose, I yield and follow Light.

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to examine all of life and think for yourself.

I hope you will join me here where we discuss all of life each day.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.
