This free scarecrow craft printable is a simple fall activity for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade children. The pieces are easy to trace, cut, and assemble, making it a good choice even for moms and children who feel a bit artistically challenged.
A scarecrow is one of those cheerful symbols of autumn, and this craft gives children room to choose colors, add details, and create their own little fall scene. It works well as part of a fall unit study, farm theme, harvest lesson, or relaxed afternoon of seasonal crafting.

Scarecrow Craft Supplies
To make this easy scarecrow craft, you will need:
- Free scarecrow craft printable template
- Tagboard or cardstock for tracing pieces
- Colored construction paper
- Yellow construction paper for straw hands
- Scissors
- Glue stick or liquid glue
- Large background paper or easel paper
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
How to Make the Scarecrow Craft
Prepare copies of the scarecrow pieces for your children to trace. Tagboard or cardstock works best if you want the tracing pieces to be sturdy and reusable.

Provide a variety of colored construction paper trimmed down to manageable sizes. Allow children to choose the colors for their scarecrow’s hat, shirt, pants, and other clothing pieces. This gives each child’s scarecrow its own personality.

Add Straw Hands to the Scarecrow
The scarecrow’s “hands” can be cut from yellow construction paper. Randomly snip the ends to create a fringe that looks like straw. This is an easy detail that makes the finished scarecrow look more complete.

Create a Fall Background Scene
After the scarecrow is assembled, mount it on a large piece of paper. Children can draw a fall background around the scarecrow, such as a garden, cornfield, pumpkin patch, blue sky, fence, or falling leaves.
We used a piece of easel paper from Caroline’s easel.
