On Bookstores and Books

We have lived in Cute Little Town for seven years now. We are very happy here other than the fact that we miss living close to a few amenities that were within easy driving distance when we lived in Big City. The one thing we have lamented over and over again is the lack of a cozy bookstore.

And then the longing of our hearts was answered.

We discovered this weekend a couple has opened an independent bookstore in Cute Little Town. We stopped in on Saturday as soon as we learned about it and each of us bought a book to celebrate. Yes, it is more expensive than ordering from Amazon, but I don’t care. I have longed for a bookstore to hang out in on a rainy day or snowy day. I want to do my part to make sure they are successful and here for as long as I live in Cute Little Town.

In case you were wondering, I bought A Book That Takes Its Time. David purchased 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Caroline got Mr. Popper’s Penguins and Swing It, Sunny.

Words cannot express how thrilled we are to have a bookstore just a few minutes away that we can visit whenever we want rather than the half hour ordeal we’ve had to drive to a big chain store.

Seriously.

It’s life-changing. LOL!

I’m so happy for you and your little town. I would love that too….and a stationery store with lovely pens and nice thick, smooth paper. ;o)

Yay! Your Cute Little Town had been a favorite destination for years. But something was always missing. So glad there is now a bookstore!

      Hi Judy!

Yes, Cute Little Town is such a nice place to visit for a day trip. I am SO READY for the landmark building fire reconstruction to be done. It makes going downtown much less pleasant. I can imagine how hard it has been on the rest of the shops and restaurants with all that construction mess going on for the past year. I think the barricades should be coming down soon as they were putting in new sidewalks and such this week. There is still work to do on the inside, but that should remove most of the mess on the corner/street.

      Judy,

Have you ever been in the library in Cute Little Town? They have talked about building a bigger one because the area has grown so much, but I just love our library SO MUCH. So cozy and charming inside and out. I told David yesterday if they did build another library and that building became available it would make the most fantastic coffee shop and bookstore combo.

Screen time is still limited but I have to comment. I remember the eight years we lived in Holland, there was a wonderful children’s book store that Stephanie and I went to almost weekly. It is one of her fondest memories (Christopher was born after we left Holland.) One of the Christian publishers had a bookstore there, too, that I enjoyed.

      Hi Brenda!

Lovely bookstores should be a part of every child’s upbringing. It’s sad that they are being replaced by the big bad Fox Books, I mean Amazon.

    Sallie,

I thought you might like to see this little essay I wrote inspired by our local bookstore a few months ago.

      Hi Dean,

Thank you for sharing the link to your essay. You are so correct. Years ago when I first started blogging I wrote a post called “Practicality and the Death of Beauty.” I need to find that and republish it. People have completely lost a vision for things that are eternal and transcendent in their daily life and in the life of the culture at large.
