Our Cozy Home No. 27

Happy Monday! It’s a later-in-the-day edition of the weekly post. I had a number of things I needed to get done today so writing this had to wait until I had completed them.

We’re all doing well. David has been working on some landscaping trim (red scalloped bricks) around the gardens in front of the house. He finished that up today and it looks very nice. It’s still too early to put in annuals or new perennials but hopefully we can add a few more plants and flowers next week. One good thing about the chilly April and May we’ve had so far is my ability to keep having a fire in the evening. It looks like it should last well into May this year with the arctic blast arriving later this week. The s word (snow) even came up in the forecast. I like snow, but May is a bit late even for me.

I’ve been doing massive amounts of behind-the-scenes work around this website. It’s personally quite satisfying to see the progress. I’ve been retagging all of my posts to make things easier to find when someone comes here looking for an answer. I’ve also been adjusting categories, rewriting some posts to make them better, etc. I made the popular posts and products lists in the sidebar more specific so hopefully that is beneficial. It makes me happy to make the site more helpful for people who need help or information.

I’ve also been adding in lots of free printables. I have many more to come. If the free printables aren’t where you are at, no worries. I’m not turning into a printables website. I’m simply doing a lot of batch work (like I did recipes a few weeks ago). There will be plenty of regular content as well.

I only have one goal this week and it’s one I’ve already been working on.

Goal 1 – Finish cleaning out master closet as part of the seasonal switch. I am washing everything, putting away winter clothes, getting out spring/summer clothes, etc. I’m trying to find a solution for shoes. We keep them in the original boxes, but I’d like something that generates less dust than the cardboard due to my dust allergy. I’m looking at options for breathable plastic, but haven’t found anything that I think will work well.

What do you have planned this week? Any special homemaking projects? I hope you’ll leave a comment and share what you are working on.

    I’m going to try to repaint a toilet seat this week, and clean behind/under a few pieces of furniture where small toys tend to accumulate.

      I didn’t get to either of these things this week, but I did get a quilt and a couple of other things mended, some yard work done, and a lampshade project finished.

    I have been tossing out a lot of things that have been collecting dust and taking up space. We are all doing well. We are reading a lot. Glad that you and yours are doing fine. We planted six Pansy plants. The next day four of the six were dug up by a squirrel or squirrels. They are so destructive. We had to replant them in the rain. We also have some seeds that need planting. Take care.

    Hello Sallie;
    Thanks for sharing. I’m enjoying find new things that you post and seeing the “tweeks” you’re making.
    Goals I accomplished so far;
    Was uplifted each day in His word.
    Started my American music history classes. I’m a bit “lost” on Hebrew. My recall is not good and I need a native speaker to practice with. I like the class I’m taking but am waffling on continuing.
    Continued listening to a free class in American Constitution from a college.
    Did small cleanings every day. I really like how things look more tidy doing the little each day.
    Tried a couple of new recipes and dehydrated frozen vegi and fruit.
    Year end is all done and waiting for the accountant.
    My dear one has offered to put a new book shelf together, and I’ll move the dvd’s into it.
    Meal prep for my husband and work crew on good weather working days.

      Hi Birdie,

      Are you taking the American Constitution class from Hillsdale?

        Yes I am Sallie.
        We’re enjoying the videos that they have for free. The teaching and quality is excellent. I would love to attend a class or two if I lived in the area.

          Hi Birdie,

          I’ve looked at the classes online, but never taken the time to really dig in. I know everything Hillsdale does is done with excellence.

          My first teaching job out of college was at the Hillsdale Academy, the school affiliated with Hillsdale College. It was their first year open and I had a class of 12 third, fourth, and fifth graders in a portable. In retrospect, it was my favorite year of teaching and I still think of those children to this day. I only stayed one year (long story), but it was a significant experience.

          Margaret Thatcher visited while I was there and the Academy children sang for her. William F. Buckley came and did a live Firing Line on campus and I was able to attend. Things like that. Fun stuff for a conservative. LOL!

          In fact, much of my life traces back to things that happened during the ten months I lived in Hillsdale. It’s interesting how one event and life choice can have ripple effects for decades.

    I’m reading this an entire week late. I’m working to adjust, but keep hitting these times where I’m like, “Nope, not gonna do it.”

    This week I want to continue cleaning the house, and getting a slew of posts written.

      Hi Ticia,

      No worries. I haven’t been doing a lot of extra things around the house either. I’ve been focusing on work and website. It occupies my mind and keeps me from thinking about the fact that I’m a captive in my own home. At least it gives me the feeling of having control over some part of my life and I can see how much I accomplish. I need that to keep me sane and happy.

      I hope you have a good week!
