Words Matter In This Battle Of The Fourth Turning

Choose your words carefully because you will live them out.

We live in a time in which people constantly self-censor their speech. I find it profoundly sad to watch people on YouTube use code words for things like covid, Ivermectin, vaccination, etc. Their ability to post on CensorTube and make a living is directly tied to how skillfully they can avoid the platform’s increasingly effective AI scanning of their videos.

Equally sad are the YouTubers who feel compelled to constantly offer qualifiers or disclaimers for anything and everything that could be misconstrued as somehow “hateful” (in whatever way hate is being newly defined today). Rather than speak freely, they censor themselves to avoid the outrage mob coming after them.

Words are powerful which is why a small but vocal segment of the population has been methodically trying to control them. This has been going on for literally decades since the start of political correctness. But the past few years have taken it to new levels with the open deplatforming of anyone who doesn’t submit.

But do you realize the cost when you submit to their demands?

  • Every time you acquiesce to their demands, you destroy something within yourself.
  • Every time you self-censor and agree to their paradigm, you hurt yourself.
  • Every time you use words or phrases that you never would have agreed to use even three years ago, you give up your autonomy and surrender to people who wish to control you for literally the rest of your life.

For example, have you noticed that the phrase “threat to our democracy” is now everywhere? That is intentional messaging. It serves multiple purposes including planting the idea firmly in people’s heads that we live in a democracy (also known as mob rule).

We don’t live in a democracy. We live in a constitutional republic. Every time you hear the word democracy and accept it without mentally correcting it, you buy the lie. Every time you use the word democracy for the United States of America instead of constitutional republic, you perpetuate the lie both in your own mind and in the mind of those with whom you are conversing.

(Spend a few minutes today asking yourself why there is a coordinated push from the Left to use the term “threat to our democracy” as a talking point whenever possible. If you have children, discuss it with them.)

Don’t buy the lie.

Don’t spread the lie.

Then think of all the other lies we are pressured to agree to. There are so many. Think of the words you use now that you never used until recently. Many of them you had never even heard of before. Why do you use them? Do you even believe them?

Every single time you go along to get along, you give up your freedom.

You may not clearly see it today, but you do. Every little subtle change the mob gets you to make gives them a little more power. They play the long game. They will happily and methodically wear you down a little bit every day. (Well, not happily because they are largely miserable people who wish others to be miserable as well. But they are methodical.)

How many lies do you now hear every day? How many lies do your children and grandchildren hear every day? How are you pushing back against the lies?

Some have said that the battles of the world going forward will more and more be the battle to control the minds of people. Haven’t we clearly experienced that in recent years?

How are you battling for your own mind today in this tumultuous Fourth Turning (and saving the constitutional republic at the same time)?

Sallie Schaaf Borrink

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to examine all of life and think for yourself.

I hope you will join me here where we discuss all of life each day.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
