Evangelical Theological Society Complementarian Conspiracy

There appears to be a purity push in The Evangelical Theological Society.

“Next, Stan’s intelligent suggestion that there are reasons to think this set of resolutions was part of a complementarian conspiracy:

Third, the introduction and passage of the four-fold resolution package and the internet conversations following the 67th Annual Meeting are symptomatic of the desire of some ETS members to move the Society in the direction of precise, doctrinal, and interpretive clarity and definition, ideally in the form of a doctrinal statement and other “position statements.” I am trained not only as a theologian but as a church historian; consequently I am inclined to be skeptical of conspiracy theories unless there is compelling evidence. Nevertheless, based on the evidence, some of us are now wondering if there is a conspiracy within ETS to:

  • ease out biblical egalitarians,
  • exclude women from the leadership of ETS,
  • let qualified women scholars know they are not part of ‘the old boys network’

    Hi Sallie,

I appreciate that you are trying to do a good thing, but before you teach Godly things I think you should study the Bible. You are leading people away from the Truth. The scriptures will set you on the right path, 2 Timothy 2:15

      Hi Xavier,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I agree that 2 Timothy 2:15 is a wonderful Scripture and one I have tried to follow in my life. In fact, if you dig a little bit you’ll discover this entire site is about years and years of my husband and I studying the Bible and trying to understand what the Lord has to say about how women function in the ekklesia.

      Best wishes,
      Sallie

Ok, if you are teaching the Bible then why would you be against a system where the father is the head of the house, or am I misunderstanding what you mean? God is a father and He has called the man to be the head of the house. For example Ephesians 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

    Hi again!

One thing to clarify. Most of this site is a collection of information that I’ve found as I’ve researched these topics. I share a lot of links. I wish I had time to write my own in-depth studies, but I don’t. But I do share what I find with other people who are interested in studying the same things.

What does the word “head” mean in Ephesians 5:23? We think of head as boss or someone who is in charge. It’s quite likely that isn’t at all what it means in the original context. Here are a few good articles that go into great depth about this very verse.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
