Quotes Of Truth To Live By

I have long collected quotes in journals and notebooks. You can find some of them in themed quote collections on my site under Quote Collections. This collection of quotes focuses on truth to live by. Originally published on December 11, 2005, I’m republishing it today and hope the following words encourage you to live your life full of truth.

Nothing will ever be attempted, if all possible objections must first be overcome.
Samuel Johnson

Better to love God and die unknown than to love the world and be a hero; better to be content with poverty than to die a slave to wealth; better to have taken some risks and lost than to have done nothing and succeeded at it.
Erwin W. Lutzer

A life making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.
George Bernard Shaw

Do not be angry that you cannot make others as you would wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be.
Thomas à Kempis

Everyone may be entitled to his own opinion but everyone is not entitled to his own truth. Truth is but one.
Doug Groothius

Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.
Warren Wiersbe

Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance.
C. S. Lewis

A sacred regard to the authority of God ought to lead us to reject an error, however old, sanctioned by whatever authority, or however generally practiced.
C. H. Spurgeon

It is better to be faithful than famous.
Theodore Roosevelt

Peace if possible, truth at all costs.
Martin Luther

Sometimes God doesn’t tell us His plan because we wouldn’t believe it anyway.
Carlton Pearson

Today Jesus Christ is being dispatched as the Figurehead of a Religion, a mere example. He is that, but he is infinitely more; He is salvation itself, He is the Gospel of God.
Oswald Chambers

Insomuch as anyone pushes you nearer to God, they are your truest friend.
Author Unknown

Beware of cut-and-dried theologies that reduce the ways of God to a manageable formula that keeps life safe. God often does the unexplainable just to keep us on our toes — and also on our knees.
Warren Wiersbe

Wise men are not always silent, but they know when to be.
Author Unknown

If you stand up and be counted, from time to time you may get yourself knocked down. But remember this: A man flattened by an opponent can get up again. A man flattened by conformity stays down for good.
Thomas J. Watson, Jr.

We never know when our disappointment will be His appointment.
Charles Swindoll

Nothing can be said so clearly as to preclude the possibility of it being misunderstood.
Philipp Melanchthon

The opposite of bravery is not cowardice, but conformity.
Robert Anthony

I believe it to be a great mistake to present Christianity as something charming and popular with no offense in it….We cannot blink at the fact that gentle Jesus meek and mild was so stiff in his opinions and so inflammatory in his language that he was thrown out of church, stoned, hunted from place to place, and finally gibbeted as a firebrand and a public danger. Whatever his peace was, it was not the peace of an amiable indifference.
Dorothy Sayers

“Nothing can be said so clearly as to preclude the possibility of it being misunderstood.”

Ain’t that the truth! Or did I just misunderstand it? heh

That visitorsonline.info thing is hanging up your site, Sallie. Gotta love it…not.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Sallie for this calming post. I came over on Saturday night hoping for a rest after a busy day, and was agahst reading all the hoopla over your well intentioned awards. I was afraid it was going to push you into another sabbatical!! Sorry, but I beat a hasty retreat. Today was another day with some unexpected turns, so finding sleep alusive, I ventured to test your blog waters once more. I was well rewarded. I just relaxed so much reading this post and meditating on the photos of God’s glorious creation. When I get done writing, I am going to reread this post again, and then I will close my day. Thanks. I needed this post. pam

Those are great quotes. Got to love Dorothy Sayers!!! Whenever I hear of someone keeping a quote book, I think of Father Tim in the Mitford novels. He kept such a book and loved going back and reading the quotes.

      Hi Brenda,

I’m glad you enjoyed them. I had forgotten Father Tim keeps a quote book. David has been reading through Mitford again these recent months. I haven’t read them in ages.

I had forgotten you are a Dorothy Sayers fan. I haven’t read much by her. So many authors, so little time…

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to examine all of life and think for yourself.

I hope you will join me here where we discuss all of life each day.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
