The Return of the Ancient Gods?

Any Christian who is walking with the Lord can look around and know that something is terribly different in 2023 when compared to even 2019. We are surrounded by things that make absolutely no sense.

How many times have you said that people have lost their minds since the lockdowns began? Since we started injecting pregnant women with an untested substance? Since friends, fellow church members, neighbors, and family turned their back on you because something inexplicable came over them? People taking toddlers and preschoolers to see the most vile of sexual performances? Mutilating children under the age of ten in ways that can never be reversed? Encouraging teenagers to deny the most basic truths of biology and destroy the rest of their lives before they even understand what life is? Formerly rational people (Christian or not) falling lock-step into whatever the powers that be demand no matter how insane it is.

What could you point back to in our lifetime that would compare in any way to the overwhelming evil we see paraded right in front of us, all day and every day? You can’t. We’ve never seen this in our lifetime.

Something very different is going on.

Here are a few articles for you to consider as you ponder our present reality.

Naomi Wolf and the Ancient Gods by Rod Dreher introduces an article by Naomi Wolf. He says at one point:

One of the weirdest things about our current moment is the creeping realization that the fundamentalists, at whom I often sneered myself, were right about most things.

Naomi Wolf (who is Jewish) wrote in Have the Ancient Gods Returned?

Those are “the Gods” to whose sacrifice the Children of Israel constantly stray, disappointing and enraging our Creator. Those are “the Gods,” with their child sacrifice and their graven images, against whom our father Abraham rebelled and taught his descendants to rebel. Those are “the Gods” whose acceptance of child sacrifice – a real thing, a barbaric, culture-wide practice that continued for centuries in the tribes and civilizations surrounding the Children of Israel — was supplanted by animal sacrifice; this was an evolution in human civilization that is represented by the story of Abraham’s near-sacrifice of his son Isaac, when the child on the altar is replaced miraculously by a ram provided, at the last moment, by the Lord God.

The sheer amoral power of Baal, the destructive force of Moloch, the unrestrained seductiveness and sexual licentiousness of Astarte or Ashera — those are the primal forces that do indeed seem to me to have “returned.”

Or at least the energies that they represent — moral power over; death-worship; antagonism to the sexual orderliness of the intact family and faithful relationships — seem to have ‘returned,’ without restraint, since 2020.

There may well indeed be negative forces reappearing, or emerging into daylight from out of their less visible domains, who we, after two millennia of Judeo-Christianity, have literally forgotten, at least in Western civilization, how to identify. It may well be that these negative forces are highly complex, extraordinarily powerful, and stunningly well-organized.

It may indeed be the case that they have swept themselves back into our “house” in the West, and emerged visibly in the past two years.

I do believe that they were able to do so because we dropped our own end of upholding a basic covenant with God.

You really need to read the entire thing and look at the examples she shared.

Yes, the fundamentalists and conservative Christians who took God’s Word and warnings seriously were sneered at for decades as we warned of the eventual consequences of the horrible choices we were allowing in our country. We were mocked because we believed that good and evil were quite black and white and were not abstract ideas to be massaged and manipulated by more “enlightened” atheists and agnostics.

It was right there in the Old Testament and New Testament for anyone willing to humble themselves before the Lord. None of this is necessarily a surprise although I think the speed at which this evil has captured people has been shocking in some ways.

There’s no joy in being right and watching lives implode all around you. At the same time, perhaps now people will wake up to the reality of what is happening around us. You can only win the battle if you understand who you are fighting. And people can only understand what we are fighting if those of us in the know continue to speak up again and again.

As I said in Build Back Beauty in 2023, it’s Christ or chaos in this county. Period. If Christianity is not the bedrock of this country, this country as founded ceases to exist. Period. There is no half-way. There is no Christianity mixed with other belief systems to come up with something that makes everyone comfortable. It won’t work. Period. It’s Christ is Lord or chaos. Make a choice. No one should be forced to be a Christian. But if this country does not function on Christian principles and beliefs, there is no future for us. Anyone at this point who says this country can be “good and moral” without the foundations of Christianity is either deluded or working for the enemy.

We are dangerously close to losing it completely. The only way we get it back is with a massive revival from the Holy Spirit that truly changes hearts and draws people to lifelong obedience to Christ. We have at least two generations now who have no concept of what it means to live in a country infused with Christian values let alone what it means to live a Christian life. They have been living on the fumes of our Christian past and didn’t even realize how much they were benefiting from it.

Prepare yourself for what is yet to be revealed. Most people still have no idea what is coming.

It is Christ and Christ alone! That is the only way! Chaos is building up in this country. I find Naomi Wolf’s article very interesting, and she brings up some excellent points. I hope she comes to Christ. I believe she points out very accurately that the evil is in your face in this country. Sallie, you do as well. You can’t unsee what is going on and what these people are doing and putting up in this country. Those that are blind to this, seem at times willfully blind. A movement of the Holy Spirit and movement back to Jesus is ultimately what is needed. I pray for those whom I know aren’t believers will make that choice to accept Him and have a relationship with Jesus.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
