I haven’t done an “official” pregnancy update in a few weeks and this rainy Sunday seemed like a good time to do so. It is hard to believe I will be 8 months/31 weeks tomorrow! 🙂
Everyone keeps saying…
Early on in my pregnancy, it seemed that every other person said to me, “Your life is really going to change.” Now I’ve apparently entered a new phase!
I’ve lost track of how many people have recently asked me how much time I have left (eight weeks if you weren’t counting with me) and then said something to the effect of, “Wow! It seems like it’s going so quickly, but I’m sure to you it’s just dragging and that it seems like it will never end.”
Well, um, nope.
Time seems to be FLYING lately! I get to the end of the day and think – I did so much today and I didn’t get to A, B, C, D, E or F! It seems like every time I turn around it is Thursday again or Sunday or whatever.
Probably because I’m feeling quite good physically I haven’t hit that “will this never end?” phase. The only times I consistently feel less than great are 1) approximately 90 minutes after my morning insulin and 2) when I have to get out of bed. I am quite sore and stiff when I get out of bed whether it is the middle of the night or morning. (I’ve learned to not walk, but shuffle when I get out of bed and it helps tremendously.) But after some breakfast and a nice shower, I usually feel pretty great.
Anyways, the only time eight weeks sounds like a long time is when I’m feeling achy and sore and/or when I think about how much I can’t wait to see Little Miss Peanut’s face. Otherwise I think – ONLY EIGHT WEEKS!!! Oh my!
I should be on speed-dial
Last week was probably my last non-doctor’s office week until after the baby is born. This week I start with the weekly thirty minute baby monitoring (because of the gestational diabetes). Between the GD and regular checkups, I will be going in at least once a week from this point on.
GD
So far it seems that my GD is under control. I’ve only had a few readings over my limits and every time except one I knew why. David and I have a pretty good routine down and the only time it is a problem is on Sundays since our church schedule completely conflicts with my eating/testing/snacking schedule. But otherwise it hasn’t been bad.
Revisiting the poll
A number of months ago (when I was still on the old site and less than two months along) I did a poll about how much women enjoyed pregnancy. The choices ranged from “I love it and would do it a million times if I could” to “I love my children, but I hate pregnancy.” We had a pretty good cross section of replies to that survey. Several ladies left comments. Around that time I was in the middle of the “I can’t believe I spent all those years praying for this to happen and now I feel so crummy! What was I thinking?!?!?!” Thankfully I’ve been out of that phase for well over ten weeks now and I’ve actually really enjoyed weeks 20-30. I was very fortunate in that I felt Peanut move starting week 13 and have felt her moving regularly since. I think God knew I needed that encouragement to get me through weeks 13-20.
I’m still not sure how I would answer that poll myself because I’ve had extreme experiences with the physical side of pregnancy. Some people have asked me – so do you want to have another baby? (Which I find a fascinating question in light of the fact that we felt like we had no real say in even having this one!) I guess my answer at this point it – maybe? probably? I’m not sure? I have always loved babies and I’m sure once Peanut comes and starts getting out of that infant stage, that baby lover in me is going to kick in and I’ll want another one. But right now the thought of volunteering for 15-20 weeks of yuck again is just really beyond me. So we’ll have to see.
One busy baby!
In the past week to ten days we really turned a corner in the baby movement department. She is obviously bigger and stronger! I’ve gotten to the point where my stomach waves quite a bit when she moves and I definitely can feel her pushing me around for room in there. Without a doubt, this is my favorite part of pregnancy so far. I never get tired of just stopping what I am doing and watching her move around when she gets active. I probably spend a good half an hour to an hour a day just watching my stomach. What a life!
So the countdown continues!
Some of the more mathematically aware probably looked at my numbers and said – um, Sallie, 31 weeks down and 8 weeks to go doesn’t make a 40 week pregnancy. Where did you get those numbers? Well, I am 31 weeks, but it is still looking quite likely that I will be having a c-section. The last time we saw the doctor David asked him what he thought the percentages were. He said that he’s 85-90% sure I will end up with a c-section, especially now with the GD. He wants to wait until September to schedule it and not completely rule out the chance of regular delivery, but it looks like I will in all likelihood be able to have my baby around 39 weeks.
So that’s the fun around here! We’re moving David into my office right now and plan on starting on the baby’s room this week! I have to say that I’m really getting excited about putting her room together, washing all her little clothes and getting everything ready. Pulling David’s office apart yesterday made it all seem so much more real in a new way!

I loved this pregnancy update. It brought back wonderful memories. Thanks
I enjoyed being pregnant, and I delivered both babies at 38 weeks, and I never really reached that “Get it out!” stage. There’s a new website that includes birth stories, that’s pretty neat. I just posted Kyle’s Arrival. It was a miraculous story. If you feel like reading that sort of thing, there are others posted too, and you might want to post yours later. I think that there’s even a section for GD births.
I was a gestational diabetic too. Because of that I couldn’t wait to just have the baby. It was just all the appointments that wore me out. It’s great that you’re on a good schedule; just be aware that the last two months can be a roller coaster ride when it comes to blood sugars. I always felt lousy after my morning medication as well. I was on glyburide. Good luck to you!!! When are you due? I was due 10/3 last year.
Donna – You are very welcome!
Jennifer – What a wonderful story! I LOVE reading birth stories. I’ve read tons of them since I found out I was pregnant.
BBM – My official due date is 10/3 also! I am hoping that the GD won’t be all over the place the last eight weeks. 🙂
