Calvinist Pastor Gaslighting People at Grace Community Church in Hudsonville, MI

Pastor Keoni Hughes of Grace Community Church in Hudsonville, Michigan, recently preached a sermon in which he presented Calvinist doctrine to the congregation. Part of his sermon illustrates the lack of logic inherent in this philosophy. At a few different points, there is clear gaslighting going on.

Why is it gaslighting? Because what Hughes is presenting makes no logical sense from the Scriptures. He is contradicting himself in his own sermon. The Calvinist pastor is calling people to repent while at the same time telling them it is all up to God’s sovereignty. Calvinists will appeal to “mystery” when they do this, but it isn’t mystery. It’s something else. A person listening to this sermon will be confused. He is called to repent while being told he may not be part of the “elect” of God.

This is just one aspect of the troubling sermon. Jason Breda of the CensorTube channel, Good Berean, breaks down the 15 ways this pastor is (in my words) causing current and future problems for the members of his congregation.

If you are already struggling with or troubled by Calvinism, I encourage you to check out my other posts on Leaving Calvinism.

For 20+ years, I’ve been writing about following Jesus Christ and making choices based on what is true, beautiful, and eternal. Through purposeful living, self-employment, and homeschooling, our family has learned that freedom comes from a commitment to examine all of life and think for yourself.

I hope you will join me here where we discuss all of life each day.

A Christian Nation

"The real object of the first amendment was not to countenance, much less to advance, Mahometanism, or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiastical establishment, which should give to a hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Joseph Story (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court), Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), § 1871.

countenance: To favor; to encourage by opinion or words; To encourage; to appear in defense (Websters Dictionary 1828)
