What happened, I think, is that when she agreed at first about the idea of reparations, that Don went into a receptive mode and had his defenses down a bit. She then took it down the road of "it all happened because the black kings first took their people into custody" and Don had nowhere to go while having a mindset that was ready to have her agree with him. It was an epic takedown, and it's amazing to see him completely defenseless in the end. She outmaneuvered the narrative and turned it on a dime.
