I have other random accounts to delete (Locals, etc.) that are on my list as well today.

The only two I have left are Gab and Telegram

I have zero desire to delete Telegram. It's my favorite.

I am struggling the most to give up Gab. There's so much information available on there that I can't easily find anywhere else. But I also get mad every time I get on there because there is so much brutal truth available there. 😜

Field Notes: Flora Edition

Field Notes: National Parks (Series A - Yosemite, Acadia, Zion)

Field Notes: National Parks (Series C - Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone)

(There are other National Park ones at the links as well.)

Personally, I also love the stitched notebooks from The Rifle Paper Company. Swoon!

Anyway, this is one of the videos I watched that started me thinking about Field Notes and the joy of using little notebooks.

In it, the author explains why she and her husband decided to get rid of their radio after living for a long time with a tv. She felt the noises, opinions, and just the sound of the voices coming through the airwaves were invasive and often went against the goals for their family. This book was compiled in 1998, so cell phone use and the internet wasn’t necessarily assumed or even mentioned. (How much more ubiquitous are those influences these days?) In the essay, she talks about the effects of a radio-free life and her family’s renewed interest in singing for their own enjoyment.

"Human voice fills our house and is richer than any electronically generated sound can be….For over a year now we’ve lived without voices in our home save those of the real, live people who live here or those of visiting friends."

That idea is startling to me. Can you imagine that? A present person attached to every single voice in your home? I can’t. (Does the author never talk on the phone, either?) But it’s only been in this last sliver of history that we’ve been able to listen to voices of people we’ll never meet or maybe would have never intentionally invited into our homes to influence us.

Deanna has some great thoughts about community. This is something we really hoped to find when we moved to Cute Little Town and we have never found it. I honestly don't think we will find it here. I have already been praying about a move if the Lord wills it.

When we were changing churches four years ago, we started attending church where friends of our were fellowshipping. We had to cross the river and go into a different county to attend. We liked it very much, but after about six months, we realized that it wasn't going to work long term, because we would never be a part of that community. When people would meet us and ask where we lived, they would say, "Oh, over there. I don't know anything about that area." You could see the interest in us fade. Like we lived in a foreign country. We left and found our church.

Our church is about 15 minutes from our house. It's an easy drive. Most people live close by. It's easy to popover to help with a project, attend a prayer meeting, help with a women's event. They are our community, and in our community!

This summer, in an attempt to restore some sense of normality to our lives, our family embarked on two separate road trips and racked up over 4,000 miles in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and then California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. We departed on both trips from Los Angeles, the most populous county and the second-largest city in the United States. Before the pandemic, many inhabitants of large cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C. or Chicago (including me!) couldn’t imagine living somewhere smaller—somewhere less diverse, less cultural, less sophisticated.
