Oh, look. More Stringy Hair - New Sense and Sensibility

Sallie Borrink — Tue, 22 Sep 2026 00:30:45 +0000

It makes so much sense that the new Sense and Sensibility by the same person who did the awful 2005 Pride and Prejudice would have the same horrid stringy hair. (See the next comment below for my review of the 2005.)

But now we get stringy hair AND the dark, colorless production of today. At least that P&P had some pleasant sunlight from time to time.

The male casting doesn't look horrible, but what did they do to Marianne?

Alice Bryan, county librarian in North Carolina, on Grace Livingston Hill's popularity in 1946

An interesting look at the books that flew off the library shelf in 1946 - Grace Livingston Hill

By the mid-1940s, Grace Livingston Hill was at the absolute peak of her writing career with almost one-hundred beloved novels to her credit. In an uncertain, complicated post-World War II climate, readers eagerly sought out her stories for their comfort, warmth, and reliable messages of eternal hope.

Biblical Themes in "Sense and Sensibility"

Sallie Borrink — Wed, 01 Apr 2026 16:55:49 +0000

These two posts at Faith, Science, Joy, and Jane Austen offer an interesting look at the Biblical themes in Sense and Sensibility.

(Disclaimer: I cannot recommend in any way, shape, or form Karen Swallow Prior who is mentioned in the first post.)

Sense and Sensibility and the Bible: Part 1

Sense and Sensibility and the Bible: Part 2

I think Sense and Sensibility has overtaken Pride and Prejudice in my ranking of Jane Austen stories. I love Persuasion as well.

Why Do Some Books Make Us Feel Homesick For Another Place?

Sallie Borrink — Sat, 18 Oct 2025 19:04:53 +0000

This video by Olivia Grace Cook showed up in my feed several months ago.

From the description of "This is why you're still haunted by The Lord of the Rings"

Have you ever finished a really good book and felt suddenly homesick for a world that doesn’t even exist? Fantasy is often dismissed as "childish" and "escapist," but growing up, I held a secret belief that fantasy novels like Lord of the Rings, Narnia, or Harry Potter were tapping into something profoundly important about the world. There is a siren song in these powerful stories, an ache that beckons us beyond the borders of this world. But what is it that's calling to us, exactly?

Enjoy!
