Although Caroline isn’t anywhere near ready to start taking college level classes, I wanted to review JumpCourse because I know there are many people who read this blog who have right-brained children, gifted children, and children who otherwise simply learn and think outside the box. Online learning can be a great option for children like this. It provides homeschooling moms something different for their children who need learning tools that work for them more than the typical book and paperwork approach.
It became obvious to me fairly early on that Caroline is one of those children who is going to prefer and probably excel from learning through video. I count myself fortunate that this option is available for us today. (Not only does she like learning through video, she made the decision herself a long time ago to turn on the closed captioning so she reads along with almost everything she watches. This has done amazing things for her reading ability and vocabulary.) Because of the way she is wired, the idea of learning through online video courses is one that greatly interests me as a homeschooling mom.
So I accepted the opportunity to receive a course for free and am being compensated for my time to write the review. All views are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
What is JumpCourse?
JumpCourse is an online adaptive learning website that makes it possible to take college level classes in a way that works best for you. These classes are a great choice for gifted or advanced students who want to get a head start on their college coursework before enrolling in college. Each JumpCourse class includes:
- Professional videos
- Written material
- Interactive assessments
One aspect I especially liked for learners like Caroline is the information is presented in multiple ways. For example, for the class I took (Organizational Behavior) I had the opportunity to watch professionally done, highly-engaging videos and also read the same material in written form. Then I practiced what I learned through interactive activities.
The entire course is built on mastery learning and the course adapts as you go. When you fail to demonstrate mastery of a certain area, you go through it again. You must demonstrate mastery in order to continue on with the course.
What Does JumpCourse Look Like?
JumpCourse begins with a Getting Started section. You become acquainted with the layout of the site and the various features of the program. At the end, you demonstrate that you understand how everything fits together. Everything is great for highly visual learners.
There are three components to each course – Watch, Read, and Practice.
The videos are high quality and move along quickly.
The same material is also available in written format and it is easy to print it off for reading offline or reviewing.
The practice section includes a wide variety of interactive activities such as multiple choice, drag and drop definitions, and identifying information in reading passages.
The Benefits of Online Learning with JumpCourse
I can see so many benefits for courses like this. For example:
- Flexibility of scheduling and classtime
- Accelerated learning opportunities for gifted students
- Allowing homeschooling students to take classes in areas where mom and dad may not excel
- Preparing to CLEP courses and earn college credits while in high school
And perhaps the biggest benefit of all…
- Saving money!
Each class is only $99 and that includes all of the materials needed! With a number of courses to choose from now and many more starting this fall, a student could complete many of their freshman year classes at a fraction of the cost of a typical public or private college/university.
